Greg, i do understand the great heat the car must indure(sp) while racing balls to the wall for 45 minutes, i just find it odd how today with so much out there, that you have to limit yourself to a 16g. Can you post up some info on what other turbos and I/C setups you have gone through before and what exactly went wrong? Thank you for any input. :thumb:

ps. your car is my new background at work.

I've burnt up (2) Buschur big 16g's until RRE built me a custom turbo, so my big 16g is not all that stock. RRE's racecar had big overheating problems with the front mount I/C until they mounted the radiator in the trunk with a big fan. I have a fuel cell back there so that ideas out. We thought about water sprayers to cool down the radiator and added I/C performance, but then you have the added weight of a 5-7 gal water container. Sure when the water begins to run out you lose the weight but where are you in the field of racers by then. My exist I/C was the 1st Dejon prototype big sidemount and seems to be handling the job now. I think I do have enough room for 15.5x7x3 I/C in my front valance. When you change one thing it always leads to changing something else to compensate for that change. It takes a lot of testing for durability and a lot of chances for not finishing a race. I've noted that the first year we ran we had 75% DNF's. That really sucks especially when you're driving long distances and putting out a lot of money. Sure there's a lot out there...........but somebody has to buy it, test it, blow it up, buy it again, test it.................... The cycle can go on forever and ever. I have something that works right now. As a matter of fact I won the championship with it last year. But as we speak we're designing a 2.4 stroker with all the shits and giggles that should help me to kick everyones butt next year. It's gonna take some money and a lot time and energy but how cool would it be to have a 1990 Laser pass an 800HP twin turbo Porsche on the front straight of California Speedway. DSM's FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As always thanks for your support
Greg
One more thing, it's not just a big HP motor that wins the race....you need just a touch of talent and a whole lot of passion.

You make us all proud and jelous at the sametime, i love the pic with you and the Vette in the pit area if he only knew what was about to happen. Your a badas$ keep it up :dsm: Chris

Great write up man! You really are an inspiration to the rest of us. Good luck with the rest of your season!

P.S. Nice Windshield banner :thumb:

In general does one motor last all season? Do you "freshen" it up after each race?

I change all fluids between races. Oil, water w/water wetter, tranny fluid and LSD additive, brake....so on and so forth. I must say the 4G63 is an excellent engine as long as you take care of it. I keep the motor clean to see for any leaks. My CAS developed a small leak at this last race so I need to change the O ring. Other than that it's good to go.....

Really good write up and congrats on your success. The fact that you have a Laser, FWD, just tops it off. ;)

A suggestion that might help you be more efficent in your write ups. Use a word processing program for the write up then copy it to the our forums, that will help save you double checking you work. I was thinking as I was reading your post what a good job you did after a weekend of racing!!

To repeat a previous question. Where did you get your tails?

Good luck, I am looking forward to more!! :laser: :thumb:

I was pretty spent when I wrote it up but I figured get it down in the moment so I wouldn't have to think so much....spontaneity?
The rear end of the car is a standard drift kit. The Carbon Fiber wing was supplied by PannAuto here in San Diego. My original wing was aluminum and weighed about 5x's as much. I got a lot of flack from RRE about the alum. one. I also painted the clear brake lenses because everybody had some comment about them. You can make some of the people happy some of the time but............. Everybody loves the new paint job. They said it went from the "Happy Meal" to the "Flying Banana". I really try an listen to peoples opinions, (I'm not the center of my multi-verse) I mean how else will I learn..........it also keeps me young!
Thanks
Greg

Flying banana

I like the all yellow versus the old red/yellow personally.

The officail race results just came out on line Nasaproracing.com AMB Race group (C)
We use AMB transponders in our cars that track number of laps, lap time, and lap speeds. Once they're posted on the NASA site it's official.

Saturday I placed 5th in my class (Super Unlimited) and 10th overall. That's against all the other cars (v8's) on the track. All (4) Porsches took 1234, I was 5th but I should have been 4th, dam it!, then the Salleen, Nissan-Z, Ferrari, and Corvette.

Sunday I again placed 5th in my class and 9th overall. But I beat that dam yellow Porsche. As a matter of fact the guy that drives the yellow Porsche is really cool and commented what a great race we had. He climbed out of his car with a smile as big as mine at the end of the race.

Greg besides driving at 140 you have alot of buttons and gauges to look at, what do the buttons and switches do and what r all the gauges?

Man, great writeup! I love good race stories. :thumb:

Seeing your car makes me want to take my POS on a road race, unfortunately it probably wouldn't make it out of the first turn in one piece. The fact you are hanging with Porches that probably cost 10 times more shows how good the 4g63 is, and is a huge testament to the 16g turbo. Great job :thumb:

Switches are: ignition/starter/full pump/fans/coolsuit (I have a vest the has a series of IV lines sewn into it with a cooler with quart of ice water that pumps into the vest)/fire suppression system (has total of six nozzles for engine compartment and interior of car)Let's not forget the almighty boost control switch on the steering wheel/and PT radio switch
Gauges are: EGT/boost/oil pressure/volts/water temp/oil temp/fuel pressure/tach/tachlight/wide band air-fuel
When I'm racing my tach light is set at 7K RPM that I see peripherally. I mainly look at water temps and EGT every once in a while.

You're MY hero because I'm really glad to hear about you competing with SCCA. I ran SCCA San Diego Autocross for a year and a half before I decided to start roadracing again. The racers that started with autocross are usually the best drivers on the track. You really learn a lot and can hone your cornering skills in this venue. I did a lot of ride alongs with good auto-x drivers and learned so much about the capabilities of a car.

We had a handful of DSMtuners at California Speedway cheering me on. It was really cool! If you can make it out to one of the races I'll know you'll love it!

Good Job and thank you!
Greg

Great write up Greg. I can't wait to read your next installment. I think Chris made a good choice selecting you for the sponsorship program, seems like your going to earn that money through write ups and follow-ups though...

Finally, a car worthy of the "monster tach"! Please children, do not attempt that install unless you're competing at Greg's level :p

I have one :p Its a autometer cobalt......O wait I am racing SCCA Events...I have it because I can keep my eye on the road and see my RPM's out of the cornor of my eye without having to glance down so much, It has gotten to were I can judge MPH just by the RPM's on the tach. But I still find my self glancing down once in a while. We have a couple of long course's here in montana (Even though the race is only 3 laps long per driver) :D , I will post pics of this years 1st events. and do a write up. Greg has given me some major insporation to keep my head up and keep racing. So that I can make it to his level some day

Had to get the last views in.
Greg
