Figured now is as good a time to start this as any. Especially since she's seen a day at the track now. I picked up this 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD for 700 bucks back a few months ago. It had bent a rod but other then that was in good shape overall. I had a spare 6 bolt longblock laying around that I decided to drop in it.
After assembly I decided on some goals for the car. Originally with my first project I was going for the 14b no nitrous AWD record. That required extreme weightloss and the car was totally stripped. Unfortunately due to financial reasons that car never saw any time at the track. This time around I want to go a little more streetable. The car will only see what lightening I can do while still keeping it comfortable enough to daily drive. A modest goal for now is to slowly build it up over the next year and see if I can win the stock appearing class at the shootout next year.
I decided that I want to see every progression in power that I can with this build. Unfortunately the car is not completely stock but it's close enough. The only mods on the car as it currently sits: ACT 2600 clutch, ACT chromoly flywheel, K&N filter, removal of A/C and emissions, and a walbro 190lph fuel pump.
I wanted to get to the drag strip and get a baseline run on the car. Fortunately I happened to be within an hours drive of Milan Dragway when MIDSM was getting together there. I hauled butt over and about 5 miles before I got to the track my wastegate arm popped off. I was a little discouraged as I realized that the old rusty pin had given up the ghost but I figured I would give it a shot anyways. I went through tech and grabbed the tools and threw the arm back on but didn't have anything to use as a pin. I figured I might get lucky enough to make a pass anyways.
I lined up and got ready to launch. (mind you it was my first time at the drag strip racing) I revved her up to about 5000rpms and slipped the clutch out and the launch felt pretty good. I went to shift into 2nd and things went bad, the 2nd gear syncroes denied me access. The old 90 98,000 mile trans didn't like the idea of a 6500rpm shift. I managed to get her into 2nd and slammed the trouble maker down again, only to register 0 boost on my gauge. I limped her down the track and granny shifted to 3rd and crossed the finish line.
Results
2.0 60ft (not bad for my first time)
17.38 @ 75mph (horrible)
I had to take off early so even after fixing the wastegate arm again and borrowing a key ring from a buddy to use as a pin I didn't have time to make another pass. So the "baseline" will have to wait until the shootout.
I figure I'll snap off an early run at the shootout for my baseline then grab the logger and start turning up the boost a little.
Next round of mods will be
3" exhaust
Evo 3 Exhaust mani
either 2.5" tubular O2 open dump or Evo 3 O2 housing
Buschur MBC
Ported 7cm hotside and ported compressor housing
FMIC or hard pipes
From there I'll be figuring out what I'm going to use for tuning, hopefully I'll get back into a dsmlink setup as I loved it on the first project.
