Hey guys, i'm having a very hard time with an arcing issue that started after i changed the coils due to check engine light misfire code.

A brief history: This is my first DSM i just purchased it a few months back it's a '98 GSX. It has had an auto swap and appears to still have the 7 bolt engine there's an aftermarket alarm/keyless entry just to be thorough i don't think this matters but ya never know.

The car ran fine at first aside from the check engine light. i started by doing maintenance (simple stuff like, oil, suspension, and ignition).
after the new coils and wires went on i experienced arcing so bad the car would not idle. i could get it to run on 2 cylinders shortly.

What i have done: started with possible bad parts that i got for replacements so i installed the old setup. same issue. also replaced power transistor, cam angle sensor, multiple wires and plugs (yes, NGK) (plugs have been gaped to multiple widths from .30 - .22) even a new ECU. the issue remained so i thought to try to eliminate some variables. ( i understand what follows is not the ideal setup for ignition the purpose was troubleshooting.) i converted to COP to remove the coils as a variable.

I have the car running now at operating temp however the arcing is present at startup and will cause massive loss of power and will run on 2 cylinders only in some instances.

The really annoying part here is i can clearly hear the spark arcing however cannot locate it. there's no visible signs of arc and the boots do not show signs of arcing. the best i can say it's coming from the #4 cylinder area behind the intake manifold?? no idea.

sorry if this is a bit long i am out of ideas and have tried everything i know to do for this problem. anything to get me in the right direction wold be very helpful.

What's the condition of your cam angle sensor (CAS) wiring and is it a 1g or 2g CAS?

Crazy how fast money goes when you shotgun troubleshoot an issue instead of figure out what the problem is first before replacing parts.

No thanks bud i don't think you can help.
Alright dude, just make sure that when you've run out of stuff to replace check the 20yr old wiring going to the back of your CAS and make sure it's in good shape. If the previous owner of the 2g you bought switched converted it to a 1g CAS there's even more potential for the wiring to be causing your issue.

You've replaced your entire ignition system, even switching to COP, so now start checking the wiring going to all the components you've replaced making sure there's no bare wiring exposed/cut/frayed.

i'm almost certain it's a 2g CAS. Thanks for the reply that is something i hadn't considered. with it being 20 years old i don't mind replacing parts that seem to be original.
