I had a new head put on my car and transmission as well. The car sat for over 2 years before with a little gas in it and I just did an oil change, spark plugs, wires and new battery, and I added 2 gallons of gas to the car. I personally think the timing is off a tooth or 2, but I am not sure. I have a video attached of what the car sounds like and how its running after about 30min of the car idling, it still sounds the same as it did when I first kicked it over. Everything is stock on the car too. Please let me know what you think and any suggestions. Thanks.

Kind of sounds like the egr valve is being hung open. If you think that the timing is off than remove the acess cover and look at the timing marks with the crank pulley lined up on the timing cover.

Is there a way to check the egr valve? I am mechanically inclined so I can do a decent amount by myself if told how. Would I even be able to just disconnect the line on the front of the egr valve and plug it to test. By the front I mean the line that goes into the intake manifold?

And I will check the timing marks either this week or next weekend and post a pic.

I was looking and saw some people just use a coke can and trace the egr valve on that and plug it up, would that work or would I need to keep replacing it due to the heat from the head?

That will work. I've done it a few times. Put a little rtv on both sides of the aluminum.

Awesome, I will do that and see how she runs...hopefully all will be well, if not I will post another video of what it sounds like again. Any other suggestions as to what it could be, or just the egr or timing off a tooth or 2?

The piece of aluminum will go between the egr and manifold. You are essentially replaceing the gasket with a thin piece of aluminum without holes in it.

If you don't want to block it off than you can also just test it with a vacuum pump and clean all the carbon out with carb cleaner.

A compression test will tell you if the timing is off on the car. I find that easier before pulling the engine apart to check it.

How would I do the compression test to see if its off time?

Ok, well i will check it this week or weekend and see how all goes with the egr delete, ,if that doesn't fix it then I will check the timing and post up some pictures of it to see what you guys think. Thanks a lot again everyone!

I don't understand this new fad of blaming the EGR valve being stuck open. I see this more and more. Somebody somewhere must have had that happen and now its the thing to blame. Sticking EGR is NOT a common item. Possibilty but unlikely.

No, you need to hop out of 4g63 land. In order to check our timing at the crank, you need to pull the pulley and the timing belt cover so you can see the two arrows (one on the crank sproket and one on the oil pump). Like this;

Op, certainly sounds like timing (especially considering you just did the head). I don't see any cels for anything yet, so hard to tell from that.

Thanks bulletdsm I'll check the timing this week and I'll still do the egr delete cause I want a cleaner Engine bay anyway.

Or you can pull the #1 plug and put the piston at tdc.

What would pulling the plug and putting it to tdc do? What would I do that for?

The timing mark on the crank will be lined up when #1 is at tdc. Take a plastic coat hanger and cut the long straight section out of it. Now stick it in the hole and feel for when the piston is at the very top of it's stroke. From there you can remove the small inspection cover and look at the marks on the camshafts.

OK, now I am going to ask a "dumb" question. How do I turn the cams manually in order to get it to tdc on cyl1?

You are not turning just the cams, you are turning the engine engine over . Use a breaker bar with socket on the crank pulley.

Oh, okay, thanks, I'll see what I get this week when I try it. Thanks.

Ok, so I checked and the timing belt is off a tooth. I need to get the pulley puller before I can go further, but is there a way to adjust everything to its dead on without having to take out the timing belt tensioner?
