Sounds like a cammed racecar (VIDEO)

when your motor sounds like a diesel truck, then it is a timing issue... i agree with guys above about timing issue, check it

heh heh;

Ok, so I checked and the timing belt is off a tooth. I need to get the pulley puller before I can go further, but is there a way to adjust everything to its dead on without having to take out the timing belt tensioner?

Sorry, you're gonna have to pull it all out. Once you make slack in the belt, the pin in the tensioner pushes right out. You aren't going to be able to push it back in. Keep in mind that in order to push it in, you need a vise (and its a gradual "tighten down wait for pin to push in" and repeat. You're not going to be able to leverage that while on the car, unless the tensioner is broken).

Crap! Because the top bolt hole for the tensioner is stripped so I put in a bit bigger bolt with a ton of red loctite on it so I knew it wouldn't move...so now I'm going to be screwed when taking it out and IF I can even get it back in. There's no way I can loosen or take off one of the other pulleys or anything else to be able to get around having to take off or mess with the timing belt tensioner?

Ok so I redid everything and followed the Haynes manual to the "T" and still couldnt get it right. I had everything lined up perfect and then turned the crank back a half tooth as it says to do, I put the belt on in the order it said and made sure the cams were still lined up and the crank was still a half tooth BTDC then I put 21lbs of torque on the pulley and put the tensioner on to where it was touching the pulley adjuster then released the pin so it was all set, I looked at the crank and it was now off by 3 teeth in front of TDC but the cams were still lined up, so I turned the crank 2x like it says and put it on TDC then checked the cams and they were off by 3 teeth...so how the hell do I correct that? I did everything just as it says to do in the manual and this happened twice! DSM=FTW!

When I was routing the belt, I had it as tight as I could get it but towards the bottom after it was all routed, there was a lot of slack until I torqued on the pulley above the tensioner...What should I do when routing the belt other than keep tension on it with my hands starting from the crank sprocket and all the way around?

I gotta ask... Are you sure you have the right timing belt?

You honestly shouldn't have /that/ much slack in the belt unless you're routing it wrong, something is broken (idler pulley maybe?) or its the wrong belt, or maybe the belt is stretched somehow. 3 teeth just seems a bit much.

I'll have to check the belt number, but it was the one that AutoZone said was for my car. And I replaced everything down there, pulleys and all, so none of that is broken. I'm going to try putting a bolt between the cams after they're all lined up so they don't move, then see what happens, maybe it was moving but I didn't notice, but if it's still 3 teeth off, ill turn the crank 3.5 teeth BTDC so theoretically it should be dead on after 2 full crank rotations. I'll try either today or tomorrow.

Ok so i lied, I've been busy all week so i will be getting on this again Saturday and Sunday and will let you know what happens then...wish me luck.

Ok, so I tried it again and i ended up with 3 teeth off....again! BUT I think I may have found out why but couldn't compress my tensioner because I didn't have a vice at the time, but I think it is because I am putting the belt on in this order, crank, tensioner pulley, camshafts, pulley, water pump sprocket. I think that is why it keeps ending up off because I looked at the manual again and realized it is supposed to basically go from the bottom up (crank, pulley, pulley, water pump sprocket, then the cams then torque the pulley to 21 ft lbs) so I will probably try that today or tomorrow and see how all goes. Also on both my cams I only have 1 timing mark, I know they're not out time because of the notches on the cam bolts and I made sure the notches are up on the air. But anyway, would that make a difference if I have 2 exhaust cam sprockets?

Also, I looked on a few different sites and I have seen a few different directions to install the belt, I guess I will try installing it from the crank and going counter clockwise and see how that works and if it still doesn't line up I will do it from the crank and work my way up.

[RESOLVED] I finally got it timed dead on...realized I was putting the belt on starting on the wrong side. Now she purrs like a kitten again!
