As I pulled my 92 talon tsi into the garage last night after doing a photo-shoot with the local car enthusiasts I noticed a weird, almost rubbing noise coming from the timing belt side of the motor.

The problem just randomly occurred. The only thing that changed last night was my spark plugs.

I used the regular, NGK BRP6ES that I always use. Gapped at .028.

So, I took a little video clip to see what you guys think it could be.

Maybe its the timing belt tensioner, and it has given up? I checked the belt last week and seemed to be in spec/tight, but not too tight.

The motor was cold during video clip and thats why my lifters sound so mad... Also, sorry for the bad video quality... cell phone ftl.

Id get that cover off, roll the crank around by hand for you might have a small tear in the belt that is catching against the cover. Plus, you may have a slightly warped upper cover that is tinging against the belt as well.

Yeah, got the upper cover off and it was rubbing on it for sure. Also found that the belt is missing some teeth and very very thin! I am very lucky I didn't lose it again and have to rebuild another head. OMG

Car is getting torn down and I am just replacing everything.

Thanks for your response.
