Anythin would be great i just wanna get the car runnin good so i can start moddin it. Thanks alot, andy

Well, I'm not sure exactly what all you're talking about, but eliminating the balance shafts (via a "BSE kit") is a very good idea. I've seen far too many damaged engines that would not have happened if the balance shafts had not been there.

first off, i don't know what you were thinking typing like your talking to one of your hommies. the guys on here will eat you alive for typing like that. i don't really care but many others do. better be careful.

well anyways, ironically i just had a similar problem. when i bought my car i was told it had a new timing belt. problem was, they may have changed the timing belt, but were to lazy to do the balance shaft belt located behind it. just the other day it shredded and made my timing belt slip 3 teeth on the crankshaft. luckily it was at idle when it broke, and my camshafts stayed in phase. i was worried i may have bent valves but it turns out it was OK. the teeth on the balance shaft belt were totally gone. the belt was just old and couldn't take anymore abuse. you probably have the same problem.

look at you old belt and see if it is a Mitsubishi belt. if it is, chances are it's the original.
not many things make a timing belt, or balance shaft belt go bad. but here are some that do:

-oil leaks. oil on timing belt=stuck on highway with bent valves. oil contaminates the belts so if you have an oil leak in the belt cavity you need to fix it.

-improper installation. to tight or to loose ends up about the same as above. if you don't know how to change you timing belt, or are uncomfortable with it DON'T try. it's hard and requires specail tools and a bit of know how. vise grips and a screwdriver set won't help you here.

-lack of service. yep, they say change it at 60xxx for a reason.

those are some main causes for failure. check out this vfaq and it should answer many of you questions. if you don't understand what you are reading i wouldn't recommend doing this one yourself. i would also recommend replacing you water pump, and other service items recommended in the vfaq pre installation checklist. check it out:

hope this helps.
