i see alot of posts from people that has or had crank walk. i am in the market for a car and am avoiding a 2nd gen turbo for im convinced that if i do get a 2gen dsm, it will cw. from what i have read, it seems like crank walk is a "when is it going to happen" thing rather than a will it happen... am i wrong? maybe all you guys that have had your car for a long time ( and not have had crank walk) could post, what kind of driving you do and how many miles you have driven? later.

I just bought a :talon: black 95 talon tsi 6 bolt :talon: and 4 days after i got it, the crank walked!  :( now i have to get a new short block and it is 1800 for the block and 1500 for the laber does anyone know of anything cheaper i can do? please help!

Here is a suggestion.
Read this <a href = http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8817&highlight=crankwalk+fix+update> Crank Walk Fix </a>

Get that 6 bolt down to a reputable machine shop and have them machine your block like that post suggests, vs. buying a new block and such....
I'd say you can probably git her done for under $1.5k.....

Well I have a 95 GST (sale pending) with 150k that hasn't walked. And yeah I think the 95 and 96 have higher occurrences, but you also have to take into consideration that they've had more time to walk than a 99 4g63. Maybe the 99's were made better though, Idunno. But Mitsu now sells the block "redesigned" that supposedly protects against crankwalk. Whether that is the same block design that's in the 99 or the redesign took place after 99...no idea.

144k here, no signs on this one. Car walked originally at 57690 but the new bottom end is holding strong with 178 compression all the way across and no endplay. Here is an interesting take on CW from a local guy LancerMan. I did not write this so don't respond to me.

I am 100% sure I have discovered why 7 bolts are more likely to crank walk than a 6 bolt. The 7 bolt cranks are soft. They were not nitrided from the factory like 6 bolts. First I observed cranks left outside . 7 bolts rusted overnite. 6 bolts take months to rust. Then i discovered the file test. Take a small round file and try to cut in the journals. The file pretty much bounces off the 6 bolts. The 7 cuts like butter.

7 bolt blocks do not tolerate any kind of detonation or low oil pressure because of this. So that is why everyone is ditching them for the more durable 6 bolts. But is this a good idea?

The 7 bolt is superior design in many ways.
The block girdle is far superior design, adds tremendous stiffness to the main caps. The crank is 5 lbs lighter and more oil dynamic. It slices throughthe oil better. The block also comes with a splash pan so the crank doesn't have to slice through so much oil. The journlas are ten percent smaller for slightly less friction. The block IS designed to make more HP.

So where is the future? 7 bolts. All you have to do is nitride the cranks during a build up and you will have a superior block with the same durabilty.

Doing 6 bolt swaps is a pain in the arse. And there are problems. Mitsu no longer sells the 93-94 CAS. The cars will run on the earlier 1G sensors but it triggers a misfire code and is a royal pain in the arse resetting the ecu all the time. They also dont sell the 6 bolt oil bracket any longer. In short its getting difficult to find the 6 bolt parts needed to do swaps.

Unfornately nitriding is not as cheap as I hoped. It cost arond 275 after shipped two ways. Still seems like the way to go if you ask me.

98 GSX here with almost 79k and no signs of CW yet. Endplay is still within tolerances! :rocks:

crankwalked at 113K ..... rebuilt a 99 shortblock and now I'm at 117K with no signs ...

I figure crankwalk can happen to anyone. It is completely up to the bearings not the driver. So if you have dumb luck then more than likely you will get it. But I'd have to agree with a post up top that I wouldn't let it discourage you from getting a 2G.
