I overtorqued the lower nut when replacing the clutch master cylinder and snapped the stud. One nut isn't enough in this case and the master cylinder pops up on the broken side when disengaging the clutch.

Any idea what needs to be done? I wish it was the upper one but unfortunately it is the lower one which seems harder to get to or get a hammer to.

Thanks!

Don't know what its called but roofer use it to remove shingles. It L shaped with a notch in the end. May be able to get it under the stud and pop it out, Good luck, things are real tight under there.

It would probably be easiest to pull the master cylinder out and with what's left of the stud sticking out of it, grab it with pliers/vise grips and remove it. Then, re-install the master.

They are not that hard and the only "important tool" is a wobbly end for your socket down at the firewall. Then just use care when removing the brake line from the master (do this part first since the mounted MC will be easier to remove the line from). The only "extra step" youd then have is re-bleeding the clutch system, but fresh fluid flushed through it will go a long way toward improving the feel and function of the hydro system. The most important part to getting the master "out" of the car is to remove the resevior AND it's bracket to give you room to get in there.

Due to my ACT 2900 i change master and slave about every other year (sometimes sooner on cheap re-man masters) and i can change the master in about 30-40 minutes while cleaning things up and taking my time. Its a tight fit the first time but once you do it you'll never think twice about pulling it again

Welcome back Glen, haven't heard from you for quite a while, hope life made a urn for the better.

As always, Glenn came up with the easiest solution.

I am going to dig this post back up. I must have forgotten about it and thank you all for your responses.

There is one problem. I got the stud out and have been using a bolt instead. I am not sure, but I think that my Exedy master/slave combo has recently failed. (My clutch pedal got stuck on the floor while I was driving).

How do I get a new stud in place or would you just keep using a bolt? I am also concerned that the area where the master mounts is a bit deformed now from me beating on the stud to get it out and that is causing the master to fail prematurely. Is it important to straighten that mounting area out? If so, how the heck can I do that since there is no room to work?

Could a mod please move this to the brake section if better fit? I think that this post has gone beyond newb in nature.

Either way, I hope folks chime in soon.

The bolt idea is fine. Making the area flat again coulda be achieved with a piece of flat bar and a hammer; to even out the bumps. Also might want to switch to oem master and slave cylinders for reliability.

Thanks, the thing is there is no space to hammer anything. Also, how will I take care of indentations that are lower than the surface?
