smoking manifold and exhaust during boost

I recently just swapped my 14b turbo for another 14b turbo on my 2g. I refilled all the fluids and everything, once I started it, everything was fine. After a few moments, smoke started coming off the exhaust manifold and no smoke from the exhaust. AFR is jumping between 12-15, car isn't running hot, no check engine lights. I drove is around the block, no smoke from exhaust. Boosted it a few times, and smoked from the exhaust a bit. Tried searching but no one has found out solutions so far. Any help would be great....BTW it was my first time doing something besides oil changes and a bolt intake ...help me through my journey!

Is your valve cover leaking down on to the manifold? Did you remove the manifold when you swapped the turbo?

How old is the 14b ? Probably needs new seals/rebuild

Need more specifics? Is the smoke coming from where it bolts on to the head or turbo? If the manifold is smoking its most likely because you where grabbing your manifold with your dirty hands and the oil residue left on the manifold is burning up from the heat being produce.[DOUBLEPOST=1408460677][/DOUBLEPOST]

I do not think it’s his turbo, when a turbo seals go bad a lot of black smoke is produce form the exhaust. Also if it needs a rebuild depending on how bad his turbo is it usually does not produce boost and if it does it’s a very little amount.

Sounds like it was just grease/oil burning off after you swapped turbos. Did it ever burn it all off and stop smoking? If so, there's probably nothing to worry about.

No leaking from the valve cover, it's just white smoke off of the manifold, not even too strong smelling and yes I took the manifold off when I replaced the turbo.

No black smoke, just white smoke.


I just don't want to drive it and destroy something again, maybe i'll take it for a bit of leisure drive and see how it runs, boost it once and see where i'm at and post an update....thanks for the help, anymore help would be great!!

Sounds like hand grease burning off from the swap. If you swapped out your manifold studs though, I'd suspect the lower middle stud wasn't sealed. It sits in an oil galley and will seep oil.

If you used anti-seize on the turbo bolts (like you should have) it will smoke the first few heat cycles.

That's similar to what it looks like, and I didn't use "anti-seize), if I need to, I can remove everything and apply this now, just as a precaution

Its your turbo. Just replaced mine because of the same thing. The hot side is dumping oil straight into exhaust. My manifold was smoking too. Cleared up after a couple days of driving. Don't drive it till its fixed[DOUBLEPOST=1408489994][/DOUBLEPOST]Sorry. It could also be leftover oil but that should burn up in the first couple minutes of driving.

So I drove it around last night and this morning, manifold smoke is finally stopped, car will still boost, but it's still a bit of smoke coming from the exhaust sometimes at stopped lights but not while in boost or start up, or during casual driving....I think i'm just gonna drive it easily for a while, I still have a spare 14b in case things go bad...thanks everyone, any additional advice would be great btw

Oops found that my boost controller silicon hose came off the intercooler pipe and was coming off the wastegate, possible boost leakage found, i'll fix it and see what happens
