So my friend just bought a 95 rs, it smokes blue like crazy but his compression is high.

205-200-210-205

Anyway he wants to throw on a turbo (star non intercooled), is this oil burnage a big problem with turbo?
 
He might wanna fix his engine.... new gaskets all around. That's what I'm getting ready to do cuz my RS burns off oil real bad.

New headgasket, valvecover gasket and o-rings, exhaust manifold gasket, piston rings, valve seals, and new headbolts. Then think about modding the car..
 
yea change your gaskets for sure, try n pinpoint the leak if you can.

But that is an awsome compression (i hate you) LOL, yes he can turbo it (altough i would EXTREMLY recomend a intercooled) if he does not want to go intercooled then dont plan on running past 3-4 psi.

Yea we are going to check the gaskets in a couple days hopefully find out the real problem :thumb: but anyway what compression is your car miamieclipse? :p

I hear anything over 175 psi is perfect. A knew a guy in CA before who bought an RS new and the compression was about 185-190 which is good...
 
With those kinds of compression numbers, your piston rings and valve seats
are in excellent shape, I'm thinking tired valve seals.....
Get those dialed in along with the other gaskets the guys mentioned, and don't forget an intercooler.......

Imo on the estimated guess i would think i run 180+ on all 4.....canr has been properly maintained when i had it, and it received its maintance before hand....we'll see
 
Hey guys, we just did a bunch of tests today.

We pulled the spark plugs, no signs of any wear, oil spots, etc. Replaced them anyway with NGK.

Drained the radiator, checked for leaks, nothing.

Bought some of that stop leak stuff that was suppose to re-seal the valves, rings, etc. Put in half the bottle. - no result

After all this the car is still smoking blue! I am thinking the valve cover gasket or something?

One of the rad fans broke before (did not overheat though according to the gauge we just found out like a week later) so I think that there is possibly a crack in one of the gaskets.

In the meantime until you change those gaskets us LucusOil oil stabilizer. It helps a bunch with smoking engines. Depending on the miles on the engine it could also be the valve seals.
 
Doug99RS here posting under Lando's screen name since I still don't have internet at home.

It's NOT the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. These do not leak oil in to the combustion chamber cleaner. Oil smoke out of the exhaust can only come from oil leaking into the chamber. Chances are that it's your valve stem seals. They will get hard and then quit cleaning the oil off of the valves as well as allowing it to just plain drip down the valve guides.

Come on folks. Ya'll know it's going to require a bit more effort than just say "Replace your gaskets" in order to help this person out. There's only a few things that wear out that could cause this and most of the gaskets out there aren't it. Valve stem seals, piston rings, head gasket and possibly excessive crankcase pressure forcing oil in through the pcv system.

Also on the compression... it's a wee bit high but you can lower it just a bit by using some mopar combustion chamber cleaner and clean out both the intake manifolds, the cylinder head ports and valves, and finally the tops of the pistons. Now... before everyone goes jumping on me for lowering the compression let me explain it a bit.

Sure the compression numbers are high and for a non-turbo car higher compression works great. Hell, for a well tuned turbo car a higher compression ratio can yield just as much if not more than a lower compression car in the right hands. Margin for error is less, but it can be done. That being said... the higher compression numbers are probably from carbon buildup on the piston tops and the cylinder head side of the combustion chamber. This wouldn't be such a bad thing were it not for the fact that carbon retains heat and never builds up evenly ANYWHERE. Because of this heat factor, the fuel charge could ignite on the tops of the pistons instead of at the spark plug as designed. Now there are two flame fronts, one from the spark plug side of the fuel charge and one from the hot spot on the piston side of the fuel charge. The two collide in the combustion chamber and that's how you get pre-ignition and disharmony in the life of your suck-squish-bang-blow procedure. In addition to the flame front differences, the shapes of the pistons change the manor in which air moves in the chamber. Too much carbon in one spot and not enough in the other now changes the burn process again.

Long story short... clean the carbon, replace the valve stem seals and have a wunna-full day.

yeah i had the same blue smoke problem....its your head gasket/head is cracked. that is definatly the problem, burning oil i was doin same, sooner or later you will end up with oil in your coolant resorvoir. then you will start overheating and when it does you are ####ed. i had same problem, and i thought i was fine untill it started to show overheating and it ended up frying everything, very bed. i would suggest getting it checked out by a professional, to get it fixed i was told by my pro at the highest $1000, any other question feel free to ask

I see my nice long post explaining things very clearly went completely over your head. First if the head was cracked then your compression would not be good. Second, if your headgasket were blown then your compression would not be good. If you had done a compression check before your headgasket was replaced then I'm sure you would have had BAD compression numbers.

why do you have it as n/t with turbo?
 
is there a way to "check" the valve stem seals? I think mine are shot, but is there a way I can check to make sure they are the cause of my oil burning. I have no shaft play on the turbo, and my compression is 190 accross the board, dry. I have oil in combustion chamber two, I can see it on the plugs.
 
Not really. If you have the intake or exhaust manifolds off then you could have put some oil dye in there and then inspect the ports after having run it. But if you've got the exhaust manifold off or the intake off then chances are you're pulling the head or aren't afraid to replace the seals anyways. Chances are that if the turbo is good then you've got bad valve stem seals. It is a possibility that the oil control ring on the piston is worn out and no longer cleaning the cylinder walls. But again would involve pulling the head and you'd want to replace the valve stem seals anyways.

doug, what r u talking about "shot form the hip" im juust saying what my problem is and u dont gotta say that im givin bad inforation. i had mine checked by a professional and im saying what happened to me.

well you told him it was this, and it was that. not it could be this. dont tell him its definatly this thats the problem when it could be something else
 
Sorry to bump this old thread but im having this same problem too! The tip of my exhaust has a lot of oil on it, but car starts very well, I turn the key and it starts like a pro with very little crank needed even in the cold weather no misfiring! I did a leak down test it raised my compress by about 10 psi, nothing much. I got 180 on all 4 cyls in the first place but im still getting oil burning :mad:

These valve stems seals, are they known to go? My car has only 69 thousand on the odo and I dont drive it hard. I'm the only owner too!!
 
I'm in the same boat in the oil burnage thing, I only smoke when the engine is getting warm though. The guys at 2gnt.com says it probably the valve guide since its not smoking when I start her up. I really don't alot of money to fix this problem because of college is coming out of my pockets. This suck for me, I go through a quart of oil every two weeks.

Doug can I use 20-50 until I have money to fix this to bring oil consumption to mininal?
By using this thick suuuuurup will this effect anything else in my engine? OMG
 
Would the valve stem seals and the valve guide seals be the same thing? Sorry im new when it comes to engine rebuilding!

Please help guys!

no its not. mine is 200-210-200-200

your turbo, hes non turbo. we are going to have higher compression then you. we also have working CAP lock buttons ;)
