Saw a couple posts similar but need some opinions on what all I need to plan for here. I got this car 1-1.5 weeks ago. 125k on it and even though I was told WAY DIFFERENT, pretty sure it's all stock (besides little piddly stuff). I drove it about 2-3 days and no smoke or anything. I did the oil change (put a 5-30 high mileage) and what I took out was BLACK and had a slight gas smell to it. Anywho, after the oil change it is a smokin. I get smoke when I get on it (4500-5500 rpms) and when I let off it smokes more. Then when I take off I get some more. Normal driving it doesn't smoke. Doesn't always smoke at higher rpms, but when shifting and first accelerating it does (Blueish like oil burn). Also checked for boost leaks today and WOW, whole different story. Fixed those (except some really small ones to do tomorrow). Whole problem is wasn't smoking and after oil change it is getting kinda bad. Compression is kind of low too 132-148 dry, 140-150 wet. Valve stem seals, rings, full rebuild, turbo (t-25 with very slight movement in and out, no up and down)? What do I need to save up and do?

thanks
and on a 2g I'm pretty sure the factory limit is 130. Did you do the compression test with the engine fully warmed up?
The wet test didnt seem to help the numbers alot soo wouldn't that mean the rings are good and the problem is somewhere else?

That's what I'm trying to find out. Yes it was fully warmed up. That was really the whole point to this thread. What could it be. I'm not real sure it's the turbo (or not the only problem) I'm looking for the answer to your thought exactly

10W30 is what is recommended at the thinnest. I don't care what the expert behind the counter at AutoZone has told you or what the expert oil guy has told you either....our engines are built around tolerances that require at least 10W30.

If Mitsubishi felt 5W20 (which wasn't even available prior to the year 2000) or 5W30 is what was best, that would be what is recommended.

I wonder if its your valves or valve seals. If it was the head gasket compression would be down on 1 or 2 cylinders not all 4.

Gotta love buying a car and finding all the surprises. I got a oil leak I need to find as well. Im thinkin its the dipstick tube so I got a o ring for it hope it's the problem.

I bought a car like that. The owner put heavy oil and stop leak in it to stop smoking long enough to sell it to me.

If the compression is that low and the oil smelled like gas then I assume the worst at piston rings. If the thicker oil fixes it for now, don't worry about it until you can afford to do the engine properly to take serious boost.

Yes burnt and poorly sealing valves can cause low compression. The only real way to tell if your valves or pistons are leaking to to do a leak down test (or have one done).

From your problem descriptions It sounds like you're headed to a rebuild eventually.
