i just noticed on the 97 eclipse gst i bought that it has a small oil leak. I looked under the car and saw the transmission had a small amount of oil on it where it had dripped from somewhere up above. I couldn't see where it is coming from but since i have not owned an eclipse for long i thought i would ask if there are any common reasons for oil leaks such as gaskets that are common to go out, etc.

Sometimes the valve cover gasket can leak and go down the back of the tranny. Hope that might help.

i will give that a look once i go back home, left my car at home for body work so i cant really check anything out right now. thanks

the valve covers on 4g63's love to leak. Find the highest point where you can see the oil and try to find the leak.

I had oil on my tranny from when my crank seal was leaking. As I would drive around, the oil would get moved around under the car and eventually I had it all over the place. Guess what I'm trying to get at is that it could be anything. I'll wish you luck anyway! :thumb:

I'm bringing back this old thread because I recently traded for a '95 GST and it has an oil leak. When parked even for a short amount of time it leaves puddles of oil, but when I check my oil it's never low. I have no idea where the oil leak is coming from and haven't really done a lot of investigating. I've only had the car for about a month, but I have not had to put any oil into it, even with the obvious leak. Any suggestions on where it could be leaking from or why the oil level never changes? Could mine also be leaking from the valve cover?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you're not just parking over the same leak? Lol, I kid...

Like stated, the valve covers crack easily and make a mess, you could also check the transmission if you haven't. Another area I've seen on mine is the oil return line on the turbo. Oil pan gaskets.

If it gets determined that its not oil it could be a power steering line, res, pump. Could also be something clutch master cylinder related... when I swapped mine out and got a little of the fluid dripping down I noticed it appears to come out and drip on the ground just inside the driver tire at the back of it (front tire)

It would help us out if you told us a location its dripping at... or leave a fresh piece of cardboard under the whole front end, park on it and snap a pic.

Oil return line from turbo, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, oil cap. Those are all the places that leaked oil from my car in the past. I'd put a pan or something to see how much oil is really leaking
