My engine was rebuilt 1500 miles ago and i changed the oil for the first time tonight, i noticed some metal sparkle in the oil so i figured that was from the molly lube or sumthing to i ran a magnet through the waste oil and picked up these guys, 4 of them, silver, little gold on one of them, very magnetic , looks like steel, the head was sent to a machine shop before installation of the 272 cams, the short block had about 1000 miles on it when i got it, but the previous owner may have blown a turbo on it so maybe thrust bearing, my oil pressure is fine, idles at 12.5 psi, raises 10 psi per 1000 rpms, no noises or knocks or ticks, any idea? Im going to take the filter apart know

on a fresh rebuild I would assume the engine wasn't completely cleaned out after the rebuild. I would defenitely would drop your oil pan and check your bearings. But if there is no smoke or noises I say your safe. Please check your bearings to make sure tho...
also, kudos to the magnet I've never thought about that

I'm willing to bet it's shavings from machine work too, but that is almost as bad. How much of those shavings are ciruclating the oil passages and if just one smaller than the thickness of a piece of paper gets stuck between the crank/rods and the bearings it's going to wreck havoc.

If the engine is under warranty I would not do ANYTHING by return it to the engine builder; dropping the pan may void the warranty.

1,500 miles on a fresh rebuild for before an oil change...
I would have probably changed it 3 times by then. After it got to operating temp on first start-up, after 300-500 miles, and again at 1,000 miles.

Agreed ^ , thats the oil change schedule I use after a rebuild.

The shop I was at for while would blow out every nook and cranny with 120 psi air, hot tank the piece in a high frequency tub, pull/drain it dry, heat gun any remaining wet spots, and blow it out again... I rarely saw any shavings left after that. Even in the small passages. Granted, you may get a couple small shavings that were stubborn come out of it, but that was it. If I cleaned something, I cleaned it as clean as I could possibly get it. I never saw big strip shavings that size come out of anything that place worked on. Reputation is everything when there's other machine shops capable of the same work in the area.
