Hey guys, one of my girlfriends has a GST like me and she thinks that her turbo might be slipping and she says that it doesnt want to kick in, it sputters. Is this possibly signs of a slipping turbo or maybe something else? thanks for all the help

have you driven the car and can you describe it better?? any check engine lights, anything

Well, there are quite a few things. Look for blue smoke when under moderate/hard acceleration.
While 'boosting', you will hear a very high pitched sound. There is an extreme difference between a good sounding turbo spool-up, and a bad turbo spool-up. Trust me.
Ask if she has had to fill the car with coolant or oil more often than usual. i.e-this does NOT apply to reg maint., oil changes/whatever.
The FIRST thing to do however, is to take off the intake pipe and check the compressor wheel for shaft play. A good indication is no up/down, side/side movement. A bad turbo will have all sorts of movement.

What year is this GS-T? How many miles? When was the last time she had her fuel/engine/coolant actually flushed out? Shot spark plugs could cause this too. A compression check would also be helpful. Also look to see if any intercooer, or even intake pipe has come off or has huge holes in it. I know it sounds like alot, and I'm sure I don't have every avenue listed, but just take it one step at a time, and come back here and let us know what's up. :thumb:

Take the intake off, and check for shaft play on the turbo. This would be my first thing I would check to see if my turbo is going bad.

But like GSTBlack95 I never knew a turbo could slip.:D :D You might want to use different terms because clutches slip, turbos don't. Well not that I know of ROFL

Hopes this helps, let us know what you find when you go to check her turbo.

Stay boostin

Just incase you dont know, to check for shaftplay, put your finger on the shaft that the turbine wheel is connected to and see if you can rock it back and fourth/up and down..

ACTUALLY, you need to be concerned with in/out shaft play. It's normal to have a bit of up/down--side/side play, though too much is obviously bad.

For the love of God, make SURE that the car is NOT Running!!!

Unbelieveable in all this BS ramblings on only a couple people contributed anything worth half a pile of crap. Check for boost leaks... Check ignition related components, start by pulling the plugs, than inspect/replace old/worn wires. By the sounds of it, which is vague at best my guess is you dont have a blown turbo, more likely an air leak or bad ignition related components.

she has a 1999 Black GST and she has 80.000 miles on it. No check ingine lights are coming on and there is no blue smoke. she says she doesn't think that her spark plug wires have ever been changed but then again she has only had the car for 8 months. Last week was the first signs she noticed of the car doing this, and it has done it every day this week but today (Thursday). Any suggestions or anything else you all need to know? thanks ya'll

Dont check for turbo slippage! Check your exhaust belt and your blinker fluid
