Side mount I/C questions

I notice a lot of people keep the side mount inter-cooler until upgrading the turbo. Is there a benefit to keeping it? I see a large $ signs when I look into upgraded piping. I will be upgrading to a 16G after i get all the supporting mods. I just want to know if I use a smaller core FMIC will I have a lot more lag to where it hurts performance from the 14B? Will the factory piping do the job until the 14B is maxed out? I am aiming for a max 350 WHP, although i know the drive for more may come later.

The 14B would absolutely benefit from a FMIC setup. Just search around eBay to find some really great deals on products others have used in the past. I have no personal experience with them, but you can get a kit for pretty cheap. And they hold up (no leaks) for the most part, from what I hear. Do some searching on this site and you'll find quite a few threads regarding this topic.

I can't stress enough that our very own Punishment Racing and VR-Speed have great FMIC BOLT-ON kits for our 1g and 2g cars. PR has been great with prices recently, I think they even have a group buy. The VR kit is awesome. I've had both and recommend both.

Sadly just to make me look like a jerk, the internet brings up VR Speed factory for me right after I post this thread, and somebody who has used the VR Speed Factory Kit. This is more of what I was looking for. How well did the VR Speed hold up? Does the piping kit fit well?

I had a vr-speed fmic kit on my previous gst and i will get another one for my current dsm again.
They intercooler is great for the money, fits and performs well.
All you would have to do is trim and open up the radiator support a little for the pipes to go through, that's it.
It's the shortest route for DSM's and it's only $320.

I have a 16g turbo on a 1g 6 bolt in my 95 gst with supporting mods but i only have new intercooler piping and not a front mount. What psi could I run safely on that side mount w/ the piping for the time being?

Idk. I'm not a big fan of stock smic. I have all Hahn Racecraft hard ic pipes. Even with my fp big t28 the stock smic was getting hot enough to fry eggs on. Alot of heatsoak. I switched it out for a Hahn Racecraft big smic. Problem solved. Efficienct as all hell. I found the stock smic to be useless but a good quality big smic did the trick nicely.

Right now I'm running 10psi on it w/ the 16g but im looking for a front mount now but money getting tight so might have to wait a while for it.

Looked into punishment and VR Speed factory, these both look good enough for what i want to do. Punishment has an inexspensive hard pipe kit, but i'd rather spend the extra $150 and get a complete intercooler.

Get a stock EVO FMIC and some of the factory piping and plumb it for that. I have found a lot of sucess with these on 1g cars and they are very cost effective. Most can be made for less than $150.

If you already have all of your supporting mods then go for the FMIC. You truly do not need to upgrade your IC until it starts to become heat soaked consistently. If you want to go with a stock look however, keep the sidemount and run meth injection OR get a Supra sidemount (and run meth injection on that if you want to as well)

Punishment is a supporting vendor and so is VR Speed Factory (Mangina24). I have the first style of the 2g FMIC and it's awesome.

You have to use a logger and see where you start to get knock. It's all in tuning, not your mods. You can have every mod in the world that could let you run 8 sec but without tuning you will still be able to cause damage to your motor.

Tuned fuel is what will allow you to run more PSI safely on your turbo.

OK i don't want to sound stupid, but how come I never see V-Mounted intercoolers on our cars like you do On Supras, RX-7's and Subies? This can be effective as well as same some space. I dont think the fab work would be worth it, but maybe?

Editing my post, I just looked into my engine bay and now i see why. the hot exhaust is sitting where it would be ideal to mount a V-Mount intercooler.

It takes more depth. going from the airdam to the turbo there is very little room. I can't imagine getting a large turbo hanging off the motor and have enough room for a vmount system. But it certainly is much more efficient.
