So as the title says, with stock injectors, stock boost but on a 16g, which is soon to be a small 16g, will a front mount I/C hurt performance? Would this setup with either turbo, be better off with a stock I/C setup as far as get up speed, on a daily driver?

I guess it seems a little late for me to consider this AFTER my build, but I just bolted on the front mount kit that came with my car...but the car seems a tad slow in the inital take off but this IS my FIRST DSM after all haha.

from my understanding, stock I/C can build pressure much faster/easier simply from less space to have to build pressure, but prone to heatsoakage. at the same time, front mount I/C restricts airflow to the radiator, with my A/c condensor outa the way.

thanks again everyone

Yes, a larger volume intake system can decrease spool time, but not enough to worry about or even make a noticeable difference. Swapping the stock IC setup for a decent FMIC kit isn't going to add 500rpm lag and destroy low end torque. With my Punishment FMIC kit, I was still spooling my Small 16g around 3k on E85.

However, the stock SMIC could easily hurt your performance. They stock piping and intercooler aren't very efficient at all. Small frame turbos can create a very hot air charge when pushed. My Small 16g at around 20psi could heat soak my Godspeed core in just a few WOT pulls. I know you said the car is basically stock, but who knows what you'll want to do in the near future.

So I wouldn't swap out the FMIC for a SMIC. Chances are you would be putting the FMIC back in soon.

thanks for the help. this is a new rebuild like I mentioned, but was just wondering why my car feels slow in the first few gears, no boost leaks, builds boost fine it seems, but my first dsm. I just wish how normal these cars feel from the factory.

any reasons why the car would feel slow upon inital acceleration? the oil & fuel pressure are fine, vacc & boost also working as it should. wideband readings are perfect & consistent. timing is dead on along with ignition timing.

on my previous gst the evo3 16g felt slow on 12psi. The car was all factory accept the 16g. How I bought it.....you need to free up your exhaust but then you may run into boost creep (typical if you dont mod it right.) Free up the exhaust and intake you will notice a big difference. My TSI felt slow when it was stock but after my mods even with the stock turbo it has woken up quite a bit. Yours will do the same.

I would just get the fmic and call it a day. Ya the side mount might be ok sence your rather stock. But if you start making 280+hp ide say then you want get fmic especially hot days if your out ripping around. Once you get fmic you will like it. Anything mhi spools fast don't worry to much about lag there won't really be none.

well for my exhaust I have an evo 3 manifold & 02 housing, 3" downpipe and megan racing catback. not really feeling any boost related issues but still going to double check a BLT tomorow after another drive.

Also for the other poster, the FMIC kit is already insalled, but its a fairly cheap ebay kit that came with th e car when I bought it junked.

I am not sure how much more air the small 16g is moving at 12 psi over the T25, but it is certainly moving more. Possible the fuel system not keeping up with it? I would think that the stock system could handle the added air at lower rpm when fuel consumption isn't very high and possibly become a problem at the top end. Is the turbo new / rebuilt? I agree with Clipto, you shouldn't be seeing much lag.

Well I have the wastegate attached to the intercooler piping nipple to keep it at stock boos, and I've read it will flow more then stock at stock boost levels but it should be safe as long as I didn't turn up the boost/fuel without tuning.

honestly, the turbo is a brand new ebay 16g, thus the reason im getting a new small 16g

man ebay sounds like the issue. Your other mods seem good and the set up you chose helped keep creep away. Ebay stuff is alot lower quality.....on the outside they seem the same but inside the parts are different. SOME things are ok from ebay like piping or t-bolt clamps ect. Your car shouldn't feel to slow with your listed mods.

going back to the smic vs the fmic i had 380-400hp never dyno tuned it but i was on 10 lbs on my garrett turbo on hard piped smic if you hard piped the side mount it will last for awhile.. i never noticed any issues with boost lag or anything, now i did get boost leaks a few times but a piece of sand paper to ruff up the edges on the smic cured that! BUT a fmic looks so much better then a huge opening... in honesty here i ran the smic but had my fmic in the front for looks and because i didnt have the piping for it LOL..

but you should be fine on your mod list to run a smic..

keep up the modding good sir.

dustin

also to add i had quite abit of stuff done to mine vs your car.. but i made decent numbers on my smic.... which ever way you go youll be fine.

so you're suggesting i run the side mount? im sure my ebay turbo has alot to do with my problem, so i cant wait till i can order the new one.
