Should I keep it?

I need an opinion from DSM owners whether i should keep or sell my car. Iv'e been reading that i should be ready to dump 60k into it to make it reliable.

Its a 95 Talon TSI. 149000 miles. runs good. havent had any engine problems driving it to the next town and back.

I dont have a lot of money.

60k to make it reliable? You can have a brand new engine for at most 5k... Through in another grand or two fixing anything that might be broken and doing a full fluid flush and fill. If you have no problems keep it....

Do a compression test, see how it is. Maybe due a rebuild, but dont if its not necessary. Do the regular things, fluid changes, new belts. It will be fine.

But you should recirculate that bov.

You dont need 60k to make it reliable. Just take care of it, do maintanence on time and dont let anyone else drive it. Good luck

Dump it. Go honda for reliability and never look back. Of course I'm bias. . I'm more of a honda guy. All the honda's I've own never really gave me any and I mean any major problems! Well over the 140k mark to if I may say!

60k? I have put less that 1000 into mine, that includes the $200 cost for the car, and $300 for the car that donated the motor. Everything else was just maintenance. Over a year and over 10,000 miles.

Honda's are not the most reliable. Anything can be reliable. Personal examples:

1989 Mercedes 300E 265k miles, nothing ever rebuilt (Sold to collector)
1989 Chevy Astro 165k miles, (traded in on new van in 1997)
1998 Buick Park Avenue, 190k miles (Sold 4 months ago)
1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2l V8 215k miles (Still Own)
1992 Eagle Talon TSi AWD 180k on chassis, 152k on motor, Daily Driver

Perform the required maintenance, remember it is a performance car, so there are extra parts that need to be maintained.

You have a rust free car and a garage!! You could have the motor rebuilt AND buy a Shep or Jacks tranny and still be under 6k. There isn't any honda or toyota (save a Supra) that will make you smile as big as when you boost!!

Like everyone said, as long at the timing belt was done, compression is good, turbo is good, it doesn't burn oil or leak fluids I think you're in good shape. I'd say keep it, fix the side skirt, recirculate the blow off valve, get a timing belt cover, and enjoy the car. 60K into a car to make it reliable? I hope that was a typo. I bought my GSX with 187K on it, it now has over 216K, and I've maybe stuck 500 into it since I bought it. There's no set interval on when things need to be rebuilt. There are tests that are done to determine if it needs to be rebuilt.

Oh, and zip ties to hold the boost gauge? Come on, mount it properly.

I say keep it and i have a 1g with a 170000 and i love it and i have a 95 gsx and dont listen to DSMDELIVERYBOY hes just being a dick.

I say keep it too. Take the advice given on this thread about maintenance and you should be good to go. Another way to keep our DSM's strong and running is not to abuse them. To many times do I see people complain about there cars messing up when it was just operator error.
