The passenger side needed 7 washers, and the driver side only needed 5 washers to get them straight, my questions is.... is it uncommon to use a different amount of shims for the left and right side?

Define straight. Is that by eye or a measured value?

They should require the same amount if everything is straight/perfect. If the car drives well then I wouldn't worry about the odd number of washers.

i checked it with a carpenters level. I compared them before and after the installation.
