Shimming a TiAL Wastegate

No worries Don. I hope a few other people try it and post back their results. Dan's setup is a mirror to mine so he should see similar boost, but I'd be interested in seeing what Paul could get out of a 1 bar spring with 3 shims.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Matt,

This is exactly the same advice I gave Dan (project_tsi) last night if he planned on doing this. Unfortunately for me, I have no bench vise so my technique was to hold it wrestle with it while on the manifold until my wife could completely thread in three of the allen heads.

You're right, this method is rather dangerous and I'll issue a warning similar to yours:

Please exercise due care and perform this mod at your own risk. Eye protection is mandatory and it's best to shim the wastegate in a vise with either wood blocks or a soft cloth on either side to prevent scratching.

Thanks for bringing this up,

Andy

P.S. I'm an old Mustang guy and I'll bet that 331 was very stout!

Thanks, Andy.

Yeah, the Mustang was a lot of fun to work on. It was making 390RWHP when it came in to us, and ran like hell (our shop built the 331, but another shop installed the turbo kit, and missed a few things....). It made 640HP to the rear wheels before it left the shop. After I was finished tuning it, the owner of the shop took the car out for a shakedown run. He came back with a huge grin on his face and insisted that I take it for a ride. Man, was that thing sweet. Up until 3,000 RPM, it was like driving a regular smallblock. Once 3K came on, the boost hit nice and smooth, and the car took off like a bat out of hell.

Sorry for the thread crap :)

Matt.

Matt,

No worries on posting off topic. I used to tune Mustangs in the mid to late 90's and we had a ton of fun with a 95 Cobra that had a 302 stock bottom end with TFS heads, a Crane 2031 and the typical bolts ons. She ended up running 10.74 at 128 on race gas and 16 psi (Vortech V1) before the owner forgot to use the 6BTM and retard the timing on pump gas. Even on 7 cylinders, that thing was crazy. Unfortunately we never tried a turbo and I think they returned the car to street trim after toasting the motor. On all motor it ran 12.00 and it was still tons of fun.

I can't imagine how nuts the one you worked on is. Talk about going sideways at the hit of the throttle!

Thanks for the memories (sniff, sniff)

Andy

We did this as well. We had a HKS 40mm wastegate. We were stuck at 33psi on the SCM6176. We put two shims in it and went from 16psi wastegate pressure to 23psi wastegate pressure. Needless to say, we got the car over 40psi finally. Shimming does work and I would not hesitate to do it again.

Very nice! Sounds like a lot of fun. Too bad they grenaded the motor. The turbocharged 331 Mustang was a blast to tune, and I only got to work on it because of the PMS standalone fuel injection setup. The owner of the shop tunes all the carburated cars. He's got over 30 years experience with them, and I learn something every time he tunes a carb'd car, it really is amazing to watch him work his magic. We've had everything from 1000HP drag motors to our own venerable 4G63 at the shop, and everything is a learning experience. We had a 750RWHP nitrous sniffing Fox body Stang in a few months ago, as well as a 2003 Cobra with a 19PSI Bell charger pushing out 630RWHP (which hooked up better than I ever thought a Mustang could :) ). Just yesterday I got to wrench on a 1977 Corvette. We put a 383 stroker motor in it last night, and converted it to electronic fuel injection. We got half of the wiring done with it before I had to call it a night. Then it's back to the coprorate grind. :D

Always good times.

Thanks,
Matt.
