shifter got stuck between third and forth

I was driving to school yesterday and my shifter got stuck between third and forth gear. I can move it back and forth between third and forth freely without using the clutch or anything. I was able to make it to school. Some symptoms that I noticed before this happened was I would have problems down-shifting to first, and it would grind sometimes shifting to third and forth.
If you have any idea what the problem could be, and how to fix it the cheapest way possible as money is very tight at the moment. Thank you.

What do you mean it got stuck between third and fourth? Were you in the process of shifting when it happened? Can you get into any other gear?

Does it make a difference whether the car is off or on? Can you move it between gears when the car is off?

synchronizers shot maybe? happened on my old s10.
