Okay, I am having a strange problem and was wondering what you guys think it may be. I am getting a fair amount of shake when driving. It seems that 40 mph is about the worst speed for it and the shaking speed matches the speed of the car. It shakes a lot worse under hard breaking. I did have my tires balanced, lugs tightened, and asked them to just look at the pads and they said they were still good. However on my front passenger side wheels smells like metal on metal smoke. I am thinking it is a warped rotter, and spent pads, and the guy didn't bother looking at them. I don't think its the cv joint because it does not click around corners. The only thing that does not make sense to me is that if vibrates even if I am not braking, in fact it even shakes at speed in neutral. If it was just warped rotters wouldn't it only shake during breaking? Thanks a lot guys.

shakes at speeds even in neutral... im lost is the car pulling towards the direction that the smell is coming from? it could be a brake caliper sticking and your smelling burning brake material. or if its a 5spd it could be clutch your smelling? both smell about the same.. need more info to really try and help :ohdamn:

if its the GSX stop driving it and check fluids in the transfer case and diff. Or better yet wheel bearing! if you have bearings going out in the xfer case they will shake and smell or a wheel bearing will shake too it could be getting hot. touch the rim and see if it feels excessively hot

Turn to the left if the sound disappears its the right wheel bearing/hub...Turn the right if sound disappears its the left. Also take your tires off and check rotors and make sure nothing is rubbing dust plate etc....Might be a really warped rotar but my guess is a bearing.

Thanks for the fast replies! I guess I will have to get the wheels off tomorrow morning.

I just meant I could hear it and feel it while just coasting. I don't think it is the clutch because I got a new one not too long ago. It also does not pull to any side under breaking. It just shakes a lot. Also I only really smell it from one wheel.

Alright so I got everything off and it looks like a have a good bit of meat left on the pads, but they have been seeing some heat. My rotors still look a little grooved up so I am going to have them checked hopefully today. My slide bolts look good. My calipers pistons look fairly rusty. If it is the pistons will I be buying new calipers? Also can I buy just one rotor, or do I need to replace both?

I just looked at the rotor and had someone hit the breaks. One of the 2 pistons slid out without a problem and the other did not move. The one is still out. Is this normal?

Wheel bearing movement is up and down youll have to use a long bar jack the front end up jam the bar under the tire and see if there is any movement.

im not sure if the wheel movement up and down is related to a wheel bearing that is usually done to check the ball joints and side to side is done to check the tie rod ends usually if a bearing is getting bad you will hear a howling sound and just to throw it in have you checked the ball joints my lower driver side ball joint was getting bad and it would shake pretty bad a certian speed and you can only replace the lower ball joints with a whole new control arm, and i think if a brake caliper was sticking you would see smoke and it would constantly pull to the one side

I blew three wheel bearing now in DSM and strangely up and down was always the movement. Hard to explain but kinda feels different then a ball joint move of a "pop" sensation :)

Correction: "I just looked at the caliper and had someone hit the breaks"

So if I end up changing the caliper on the passenger side do I need to do the same for the driver? Does that also apply for rotors?

I'd say change rotors as a pair/set so they age similarly. Calipers can be rebuilt just like clutch system components, but I'd rebuild them all since you're already going to be bleeding lines.

As long as you switch them without emptying the break reservoir you can only bleed the one line. Make sure when you take the line off you aim it upwards so it doesnt gravity bleed dry. And check the reservoir every 5 minutes to make sure its topped off. You can just replace the one break without problem. A seized caliber can cause shaking and the smell is the pad not leaving the rotor when disengaged.

I am about to buy a new caliper and just want to be sure that this is the problem. So just to be sure I checked the old caliper again and one caliper piston does not move when the brake is applied. This is not normal is it?

Turns out I could not push the piston back into the caliper so I think that this was causing heat and warping my rotor. I got that done and am waiting for my new caliper. Thanks all for the help.

Thanks all for the help. I got the caliper installed today and it all works great. No more shakes and smell. :)
