Just bought a 50 trim with minimal shaft play in/out and up/down. Is it true that once the turbo is installed and oil and coolant are ran through the turbo that this shaft play will be reduced or eliminated???

Maybe........... .5 to 1mm of play up/down and in/out

I am running the turbo anyway, but i am just curious!

shaft play can only get worse unless you rebuild the turbo. If the blades dont touch the actualy compressur housing inner wall at all then you are fine. But if your car all of a sudden stops boosting and/or you hear a loud whirling sound then you know whats happening.
 
To do a fair and accurate shaft play test, there does need to be oil in and around the bearings on the CHRA. That alone can make a huge difference. In/out play is never good, but minimal up/down play is OK. As long as the blades on the compressor wheel arent touching the comp. housing, then go ahead and run the turbo for a couple hundred miles, and then check for shaft play. :thumb:

Yes, most turbo's when not installed will have some shaft play. Once installed the Oil will fill the gaps and eliminate the play.
 
i disagree, ANY NEW turbo should NEVER have any shaftplay, i worked for donald sim's he is famous around here for his quad turbo 67 camaro is a turbocharger specialist , any good turbo will have no shaftplay and you will be able to blow only the compressor wheel and it will freespin, if not send it back its crap. i have rebuilt prob 500 in my day, does not seem like many but they are built to very very strict tolerance. i may be new on this forum but i have been around dsm's are turbochargers for a long time. trust me when i tell you shaftplay only gets worse, get it rebuilt asap, i have a few for sale pm me for a list and prices. off topic but i recall a customer, with a 91 tsi awd with a pte 50 trim, it was probably 500 miles old, NE way he said it was making a strange noise, i said ok lets take a look, he said when i installed it i did not have the oil line so i ran it for about 10 minutes to see if it worked but i filled the cartridge up with oil, ROFL i kindly explained that he just destroyed his 1000 dollar turbo, and that was the stupidest thing i had ever heard, the point, the point is the the stupid little things kill you in the end, he said oh its cool it wont hurt anything, just like you say oh its just a little shaftplay. if it does not bother you then :thumb: go for it.
 
The shaft in my turbo feels loose. How much freeplay should I have?

While this specification does vary from one brand to another and rule of thumb is less than .030" radial freeplay and less that .002" axial freeplay.
This amount of freeplay is required to allow the bearings to "float" in a pressurized film of oil while the engine is running. The flow of oil through the clearance around the bearings is what helps the bearings stay cool. This oil film around the bearings also help dampen vibrations that occur to the rotating assembly as it moves through it range of RPM.
