so you're telling me that if a used turbo with no oil in it that has about 1mm of side to side shaft play, that when you get it all hooked up and running, the shaft play will go away pretty much from the oil flowing through it?

yes, turbos have very minimal shaft play new as well. As long as its not hitting anything. 1mm should be just fine. The oil pressure will even that play out once its in and running.

As long as it's not scraping the compressor housing, and there is NO in/out shaft play, then a very minimal amount of side/side shaft play is allowed. But even without oil, there shouldn't be in/out shaft play. Check that before anything. And look for scrapes on the compresser inlet or bent fins on the compressor wheel.

The stock turbo gasket is a multilayer steel gasket. You can pick one up at any Mitsubishi dealership for a few bucks. A few vendors on here have thicker steel gaskets, or the OEM style, also for a few dollars.

A paper/felt gasket would burn up.
