Hello. I'm new to DSM cars and I just bought 92 Laser RS turbo 4wd. I have a question regarding crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor if you want as its basically mounted on cams but doing the job of both sensors.

I read that you need to install this sensor while having #1 cylinder at TDC and intake cam at 12o clock. How do I know that camshaft is in right position so I can install sensor? If I understand correctly the timing will be off if I install the sensor while intake cam is 180° down. Also is it possible to just flip the inside of cam sensor for 180° to catch the right timing of the cam or do I need to be sure that intake cam is in just right place so I can proceed with sensor install?

Also can this sensor cause the car to not start?

The intake cam will be at 12 o'clock if everything is properly aligned timing belt-wise. Yes, the CAS can be installed 180° out (exhaust stroke) - that's why it says for the cam to be at 12. You can look at the #1 exhaust valves to confirm you're on compression and not exhaust.

No, you can't flip the inside of the CAS to correct being installed 180° out. However, because the CAS will only fit in 2 directions (0° and 180° relative to the cam) if you are 180 out you can just reinstall the CAS in the opposite direction and that will fix things. Maybe that's what you meant by "flipping the inside of the CAS" - removing it and rotating the CAS wheel 180°?

Yes, if the sensor is bad or installed wrong the car won't start. The CAS tells the ECU the position of the engine firing order, so if you are 180° out you'll be firing on exhaust strokes not compression strokes.

1. To ensure the Cam is in the right position on a DSM, the dowel pins in the cam gears both need to be pointing towards the sky at 12:00, and the crank pulley TDC mark needs to align with the mark on the lower timing belt cover.
2. Yes you can install the sensor with the cam 180 deg out of phase and the sensor also rotated 180 deg out of phase to match (but why)
3. If the sensor is broken, or not wired correctly you will not be able to start the car. It is a required sensor to trigger the spark and injectors.
