Setting Base timing on a 6bolt in a 2G

I have read the guide on how to set the base timing read below.

My questions maybe stupid I dunno but I have the timing light on #1 and the car warmed up my idle is about 850. Fans on off like it says coolant up to temp.


Now when my car is idling my timing AS INDICATED on the logger says 6-8* it bounces around now is my understanding correct that all I do is match that timing on my car? IE my timing should be flashing between 5* and 10* BTDC on my cover correct? If so that I have it set correct if you watch the pulley with the light I have the white mark appearing between the 5* BTDC mark and the 10* BTDC mark so my guess is around 7*. What confuses me is why it says this is the timing advance and it should match so do I have to add or subtract anything from the logger # for the crank #

Is this right?


Set the base timing:
1. Connect a timing light to battery power (+ and -) and the Number 1 spark plug.

2. Connect a data logger to the car and display timing advance and RPM

3. Allow the car to come up to temp. Coolant 212 deg F, 750 RPM +/- 100, Fan's should cycle on and off

4. Read the timing from the crank with no load on the motor. Each mark is 5 deg no fans, no lights, no A/C etc.

5. Adjust the position of the CAS until the readings from the TIMING LIGHT, match the timing advance displayed on the data logger. This is "stock" advance. If you have a mild setup with stock cam's you'll pass the smog inspection if your ECU timing and crank timing reads 5 deg +/-3 deg BTDC at idle

6. Add additional timing at own risk, (Timing light advance) - (ECU advance) = (Base Timing Shift) see: "The bad"

7. Tighten the 12mm nuts/bolts that hold the 1G CAS

OK to set the base timing its very simple.

do this from RRE

Now watch your logger and see what the timing says on the screen in my case it was between 6-8* while Idling so I set my timing at 7* so all you do is find out what your logger is saying no math no adding or subtracting just set the timing on the motor the same. Adjust your CAS until the timing on the crank matches the timing on the logger. Yes you can adjust the CAS with the motor running I just loostened it off enough to turn it and that was it set the timing. Its very sensitive so a little movement makes alot of change.
