Hey, so i think my starter is compeltley dead, for the past 2 weeks ive had to use a hammer to turn it on, now ive been outside for almost an hour and nothing, im thinking of going to autozone right now with my dads car to get a new starter, but when i try to unbolt mine it doesnt budge, the top bolt is like stuck, i sprayed that stupid 40crap on it, the bottom bolt moves but it seems on the other side the nut is moving too so im not getting anywere, should i get a special tool to do this or some liquid to get this out? i have to go to work in the morning and def cant wait, and i need to, and how bad would it be to do this in the dark? also its the 1.8 motor

If is it stuck from being rusted then use PB blaster. It is the best around and it works great. Let it sit for about 15-20 min at a minimum. Do you have a breaker bar? You might need it to get the bolts lose. Come to think of it, there shouldn't be a nut on the other side. It threads into the starter housing which is aluminum...it shouldn't rust solid like that?

there seems to be like another little nut on the other side of the bolt, idk what its called, like a holding thing, i remeber trying to take it off 3 weeks ago after the snow storm here

Like he said^^^there shouldn't be a nut on it but if the starter had been off before then the bolt hole could have been stripped so they may have just put a longer bolt in with a nut on it. If that's the case you just need to get a wrench on the back side and hold the nut.

yea, well i just got home, bought the pb blaster, just sprayed it on both bolts, gonan let it sit, waiting for my cousin to come by, then were gonna take the battery and air intake out, i got the new starter its a duralast 40 bucks plus core charge or some crap, hopefully the bolts come out, so im guessing negative comes off first then positive, and what about the wires on the starter? i think i see a wire on the top bolt?

Which Way Do The Bolts Get Taken Out? To The Left Or Right? Im Going With Left? But Maybe This Car Has More Mysteries?

What are you using to remove the bolts? Are you using a ratchet? If so, how long is the handle on the ratchet? You might just need some more leverage. A little more leverage can really make a big difference. Can you put a pipe or something over what you are using to gain a little more leverage?

using a wrench but now i found one of those socket wrench, the wrench i was using was a 9/16 but these sears ones tell me in mms

If you're looking at the bolt from the passenger side it's counterclockwise(or left) you may need a little more leverage on whatever your using to take the bolt out. If it's a wrench you can use the closed end on the bolt and hook the closed end of another wrench to the open end of the one you have on the bolt if you have room. Understand? It'll give you better leverage. The wire you should be able to leave on until you can move the starter around to see more clearly. Make sure the battery is disconected or it'll be like the fourth of july if the wires touch something, of course it would help you see.:)

i just did get more leverage, and the i heard a SNAP, and i broke my 9/16 little bolt, so there goes my socket wrench

Try the 14mm that's what it should be. You said they were sears(craftsman) which is good so if you break it they'll replace it.
WE GOT IT, MY COUSIN BROUGHT HIS TOOL KIT DOWN TO, WE ONLY BROKE 2 OF THE STUPID NUTS, AND ITS COMING OFF NOW, NOW THE OTHER BOLT.....maybe a new job and a new car would be better

It just takes a little patience. Things don't like to move after 20+ years so you have to show em who's boss. But if this got you all worked up then i would suggest a different car cause this won't be the last time you fight with it. Anyway i'm glad to hear you're getting it off.

we got off teh bolts, but now we cant get the starter out, weve wiggled it a bit, but the hoses are in the way, my cousin is trying to figure out how to take them off, but isnt taht the water

You got the starter out of the transmission?. If that's the case then you'll have to remove the wires just try not to lose the nut and washers unless the new one came with them which i think it does. You may not be able to get the starter up to you to get the wires off so you'll just have to manuver it till you can see them to get them off.

so im guessing the when we unscrew them, fluids going to come gushing out?

okay well were done for the night, time for bed, we'll be continuing tomorrow
