sending head and block away?

So I am starting my rebuild by sending the head and block away to be hot tanked and machined. What all do you have the Machinist do?

A list of common problems and steps would be helpful.

Valve job, resurface block deck and head. Get the oil port modification that is commonly referred to in other threads. Install balance shaft bearings turned 180 degrees if you are planning on eliminating the balance shafts. Ask machinist to check for out-of-round journals, etc. on the crankshaft.

So get them both hot tanked and then .... valve job, resurface both the head and block, oil port mod, check out-of-round journals on the crank.

If you are planning on putting in bigger cams, then have the shop also install some aftermarket valve springs/retainers. I don't know the going price for everything. $150-$200 to surface the head and valve job is normal out West. Its a good idea to send your main bearings and crankshaft so the shop can inspect everything and ensure it all fits together properly.

I was gonna rip everything out and then send the bare head and block in. and then order new parts, like rods and valves ect. And put them in the engine when i get the block and head back from being machined.

ok.. these are the prices in my area, they may be more or less in yours but will get you in the ball park

crank, polish........ $45

clean block...........$40
hone block...........$60 ( if the block needs bored, bore and hone $90)
deck block............$65
R&R BS bearings....$15
align hone/bore mains...........$125 (this may have to be done if you go to arp main studs)

R&R pistons.............$40 set ( only needed if you bore block or installing new pistons)

head work

Pressure test for cracks............. $45

(this will include, dissassembly of the head, cleaning, checking guides, cutting seats, grinding valve, testing valve springs, installing new seals and assembly of the head)

things such as back cutting valves and the oil mod will run a few more dollars (about $40-$60 as a guess)

well my goal is about 400hp and i know my headgasket is bad.

So... I was thinking getting both the head and block hot tanked and doing the oil port mod, polish crank with new bearings, and a valve job.....other than that, i was thinking new pistons and rods and some new valves, also an oem headgasket.

what elsedo you recommend for my goals with what you have listed?

well my goal is about 400hp and i know my headgasket is bad.
