I have a 98 eclipse gs, it is pretty mint with 45,000 miles on the engine, a friend i work with said they want it for $8,000.i told them i would think about it, so im in the market for a 97-99 GSX, what is a reasonable price for one, and what do i need to look or hear for when test driving one? i have never had a 4g63T so i am a complete newbie to the GSX.
any help would be great!
thank you :dsm:

You are definately making the right decision, trust me
:thumb: . I got my GSX for $3500 with a fmic, bigT28, injectors, afc, etc. Only problem was a trashed 2nd gear, but a shep tranny took care of that. I would say you should be able to find a nice, relatively low mileage 97-99 GSX for under 8k if you look around. Some things to look for: crankwalk definately (does the clutch stay down if you shift while making a hard left turn?), make sure the timing belt was done at 60k-ish miles, watch out for seperating crank pullies, and watch for any grinds or popping out of gear, in case someone had a little too much fun launching the AWD car.

Don't forget that most of the AWD have been beat up during their life, so when you figure that the car is 6 to 8 years old that something is bound to break by now. Also I would highly recomend staying away from a car that has mods. It may sound like a great way to get the car with the mod's for cheap but remember that the previous owner put those mods on to increase power for a reason. TO BEAT ON IT! I don't care what they say. We have all hear "dude, I only drove it to school and back." before. Why did they spend the money on mods if they drove it sensebly? Lastly, I am not trying to discourage you, But rather trying to make shure you know the possibilities of what you may buy! Good luck & DSM for life baby! :dsm: :rocks: :thumb:

is it true you cannot get a black w/grey interior with the 2g gsx? if not would it be hard to die it black? i am sure i want a gsx i have looked for other cars but i think that it would be the best choice for me
thank you :dsm:

If I understand right, someone offered you $8,000 for your 98 GS. I would have sold it on the spot. My friend just sold his 98 GSX, with lots of mods, for $8,000.

Interesting. I know a guy in NM with a 98 GSX for $8000. Spun rod bearing, but not a bad price if the rest of the car is clean.

The sad thing about 97-99 GSX's is.......You get what you pay for.

There are some that go $5000-8,000. But then there are some that go for 10-13K, and some 99's still draw over $15K.

It really boils down to what you want. Do you want a stock 1 owner virgin to build that has low miles, and not very abused?

Do you want a 2nd or 3rd owner car that has been hammered on since day one?

Do you want a beater that is pieced together with who knows what, who knows if all the bolts that go on the car are there or not?

I suggest finding a -stock- one owner car, as there are less problems to begin with. 1st owners usually pride themselves with their car and maintain it properly. They drive it of course cause thats what they bought it for, but they aren't trying to break anything, they just enjoy the fun of driving it.

Whatever you do:

Test drive it
Check oil pressure at idle/cruise/acceleration
Look it over for obvious oil/coolant leaks
Test all the windows/locks/sunroof, hatch, brakes, steering from lock to lock
Watch the tempature gauge after it warms up to see if it fluctuates.

Ect.

Good luck and hope to soon be welcoming you to AWD, but I can't yet, cause you still have a GS.

Good luck.

jeez it sounds like i did every thing wrong in buying my gsx.

I'm the 4th owner
slightly modded (intake, BOV, clutch, shifter,cat-back)
and i bought it with obv problems
got it for $7,600 with 90,000 miles, came with 2 uninsulated rallyart racing seats, extra blitz bumper, triple Gage pillar.

i replaced all the brakes, tiers, and I'm still try-ing to get all my maintenance done.

good thing is my engine runs extremely well. Or so my mechanic says. interior is flawless. The car sat for a long time and has allot of surface rust underneath. It has a nice fresh paint job maybe 2 years old. I just got a job at the mitsu dealer and the benefits are insane. i work in parts department, i do inventory, clerk work, ordering aftermarket and stock parts...so when ever i need something its at my disposal...at a discount :thumb: hopefully i can finish all my P.M before winter comes.

in your case i would say...listen too every one else and find a low milage, original owner GSX.

I'm very luck and fortunate my car doesn't have Major problems after being beat on by 3 owners.

ALSO..before i got my GSX, i test drove another 97 gsx in Boston...original owner...only 75,000 miles. IT WAS PERFECT....but had a blown turbo, i knew it, and he knew it....but he never mentioned it. so my advice is if you drive a a gsx thats whines when boosting..even a lil bit, I'd run...and run away fast. unless you have some extra cash and can throw in a big 16g. :D

This one was very clean. Bright red. It was on eBay a last month. No, he didn't have a spun rod bearing. It ran great....well for a DSM. Only had to put it in the shop two or three times a month. That's why he sold it.

I would have sold the GS for that much on the spot as well. I had a 95 RS with lots of mods and I only got 2200 for mine plus a trade on a 95 GSX with a blown 7 bolt and some body damage. I do have my 6-bolt install coming up this weekend and I am still trying to locate body parts for it. So I know in the End it works out like this:

SOLD RS for $3000
Bought GSX Auto for $800
Bought 6 Bolt from 91 Laser RS turbo $350
Looking for DSMLINK $?
Looking for a GM MAFT setup $?
The stock auto tranny is good but if I want to convert to 5 speed $2000
Bla bla bla

If I do everything right ill have a 95 GSX 5 speed with a 6 bolt and parts the I know because I am installing them fresh for under $5000 and that’s with aftermarket performance parts of my own.

When I was looking for a GSX it was not easy because everyone I found had something done to it. So I developed the attitude I can always do a 6 bolt swap and part out the rest if I find a GSX...Well here I am doing just that.

Make sure that all the ears on the block are there and not broken off! They are hard to inspect unless u have most of the things around the tranny off. If anyone is broken off thats like instant death (Because its worth too much to fix when u could have spent that money somewhere else). Its a really expensive and tiresome fix. TRUST ME
