So someone cut my oil feed to my turbo a while back and oil pressure gauge wasn't reading correctly so i burnt up the stock turbo and spun a rod bearing. I recently bought a big 16g turbo and replaced the rod bearings. I replaced the rod bearings by taking off the oil pan and having a friend push the pistons down from the top. Took the car out on the road and it was running mint. It boosted well and everything except for some smoke at idle, but im assuming that was from the car sitting for six months. Fifteen minutes after driving there's a soft rattle like sound i hear coming from engine bay. I turn around to head home and before i get there it turns into the same hard knocking. Is it possible that my crank is bent or something to where it would eat up new rod bearings in fifteen minutes? If so should i just scrap the motor and start saving for a new jdm? Considering they're only 1400 shipped. Or is it possible to save some money and send the crank off to get redone, or get a new one? I'm still new at all this so im trying to search for stuff that can be done. Any imput is appreciated.

It is possible for bearings to go bad pretty quickly if there is an excessive amount play around them. Basically if the clearances are way out of spec then there will be problems.

did you Plastigauge before you put them in? I made that mistake with my last motor and ate a bearing and my crank to pieces (well not pieces, but it was f***ed)

ALWAYS plastigauge bearings beafore they go in....

Measure twice, install once

Whenever you spin a rod bearing, you really shouldn't reuse it unless you have a machinist check it out to make sure the journal is still round and if possible recondition it. With the loose tolerances created by spinning that bearing, the crank can bang around on the rod and get it out of shape.

In addition to that, if the bearing spun, there is always some damage to the crankshaft journals. Sometimes it's not bad and can be polished, sometimes it's severe enough to require cutting the crank and using undersized bearings.

On top of that, when you spin a bearing, there's always little bearing bits floating around. Those bits, unless cleaned out, can cause further damage, even after you replace the bearings. You would have to break out a can of brake cleaner and spray down the oil galleys in the crank, rod, mains, oil pump, and oil filter housing, and hope that whatever you didn't get isn't enough to cause further damage.

To finish it off, when you suffer oil starvation on the level that you did, you can't assume that it was just the rod bearings that went. You'll have to check the mains as well, and in your case, if it's enough to kill the turbo, you probably have some damage to the camshaft journals in the head. In short, you're looking at a total engine rebuild.

Considering the amount of work that would have to be done to fix this engine, you're probably better off just getting a replacement.

I went with the jdm when that happend to me i'm pretty happy with that decision alot less hassle. Plus i then knew i wasnt going to face a bunch of issues.

You could always switch it out for a 6 bolt now that you have a reason to pull the motor anyways. Just a thought, but its a good thought. :thumb:

My buddy and I are replacing some rod bearings in a 2.6L Mighty Max. The thing knocked for about 2 min's before turning it off so we hope just slapping some bearings in fix it. We are going to test it out. For a $10 bearing we might as well try before tearing the motor apart.
