Schwitzer turbos

What kind of schwitzer is it? I believe newer ones are borgwarners, and I've only seen older ones used as OE on tractors. If its a old tractor one, don't even bother. Its most likely a HUGE ( like 40r/HX50 size) turbine mated to about a 40lb/min compressor.

Off-topic quiz- Rep points if you can tell me WHY the turbos used on large diesel trucks and even the T04E Garretts which came on older John Deere tractors all had small compressors mated to P-Trim turbines and giant a/r turbine housings.

:D

Haha, I should get rep points just for knowing that they did that all the time. Which is why noone used to use old tractor shit, until holsets came along. But its probably like he said, to keep the drive pressure and boost way down, and to keep the shaft speed down when the tractor got loaded down real hard with a turned up pump!

Bullseye T04B V-Trim, circa 2001/2002 = off-the-shelf tractor turbo with a DSM bolt-on turbine housing. Long before the first Bullseye HX35/HX40 turbine housing was cast. ;)

You guys are all dancing around the answer I'm looking for.

They don't have wastegates. The only way the boost level was controlled was by the size of the turbine wheel as well as the a/r of the turbine housing. The points are going to Kurt because, as he pointed out, you had to either load the engine down excessively or feed the engine more fuel in order to create more exhaust energy which would, in turn, give you a higher boost level at the compressor.

They basically used the big turbine side to let excess gasses go by without spinning the wheel to high ass rpms. The small compressor wheel allows them to achieve the desired boost for engine operation and no more. This was done because they had not come up with a better way to regulate boost yet. If I remember correctly the boost levels wer alot lower than todays levels as well.

Well dang man thats what i was saying and didnt notice that you had already posted what I was saying but better. ohh well maybe next time.

You weren't specific enough in your first answer as to why they used the housing itself to control boost pressure, and Kurt went a step further by stating that they used the larger wheel and housing to keep the shaft speed down under extreme loads...which is the function of a wastegate in modern turbo systems.

The turbine housing is pretty effing huge ha thats why i wanted a dsm housing or something smaller. The compressor wheel is pretty big. Its a 4 inch inlet and a 4 inch outlet. I actually dont know the model of the turbo. It doesnt have a lot of numbers on it and i dont know the a/r either(doesnt say on the housing). I cant post pictures either because im on my phone :( ive tried looking for a similar looking turbo but i cant find one :/. This is all that is says on the turbo:

697846
duo A
1870 70
k 264
its a 7 blade comp wheel
and an 11 blade turbine wheel.
any help??

My bad i meant 4 in inlet and 4 inch vbend. It has a 2 inch outlet of the compressor wheel
