I then thought of a hose clamp and bam worked the first time. I just clamp it on where I need to cut, which gives a very clean cut without fraying. Then I loosen very slightly to slide it back to expose some of the hose, then work that into the oiled fitting. Once slightly in place I'm able to remove the clamp and press the hose the rest of the way in.
