I believe I have a bad camshaft position sensor or wiring to it. In searching, it appears that the 95 2g sensor is on the tbelt side while later 2gs (like my '97) are on the end of the intake cam on the passenger side. I just want to make sure I'm replacing the correct part (and I hope to God that the sensor is on the pass. side so I don't have to pull the tbelt).

I get occassional P0340 codes: "Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)" on my Pocketlogger and the car runs like butt when the sensor is acting up just like every other P0340 thread I've read on the forum (starts, revs to 1200rpm, then dies or idles at <200rpm for a second, fuel in exhaust, backfires, etc). I initially read a thread talking about the sensor on the tbelt side which confused me (this is before I found out the post-95 2gs have it on the other end).

Wiggling the wire may have some effect on the problem, but sometimes it just starts working again on its own. I pulled the connector off and put it back on and the car started up afterward, but I don't know for sure if the two are related (only had it not start a few times so far).

So I'm wondering if there's a way to tell if it's a bad connection at the plug or a bad sensor.

I've not done the tests outlined in my Haynes manual yet, but I don't see how that could tell me anything if I get a good connection with the plug in my test. And if everything is working, the test may not show anything.

Finally, I've not traced the sensor harness to see if it plugs in or if it just merges with a larger harness. If there is a plug on the other end, I might replace the CAS and harness just to make sure. I read a thread for a 95 2g and the camshaft sensor harness plugged in on both ends, but I don't know about the later 2gs.

Sorry for the long thread. Any ideas/suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

I have a spare 97-99 CAS, if you want to try it.
As for the wiring, have you modified your wiring in any way? Did the previous owner? I just figure if its 100% stock chances are the wiring is fine unless someone monkey'd with it.

had the same code 2 months ago...started to act up more and more...and leave me stranded for 20 mins until it cranked...bought a new one from autozone..starts like butter now.. mines is a 2gb so it was on the intake pass side shaft

Heh...I finally realized the "Multi-quote" thing :p. Much easier than doing it manually!

Wiring is stock and I'm the only owner. I'm just wondering if it's the plug itself rather than the sensor. But like I said before, sometimes in my attempt to get things to work when it was acting up, I'd pull the plug off and put it back on, but I was under the impression at the time that the sensor was on the other end of the motor (from reading a thread related to a 95 GST).

Thanks for the offer on the CAS, but I'll pass. I think I'll grab one from Autozone so that I can stop worrying about the car not starting when I need to be somewhere in 10 minutes.

The 95 sensor harness unplugs from the rest of the harness. Does the newer, passenger-side sensor wiring unplug on the other end? If so, I could replace that, too, just in case.

And as to the actual location, you are correct....95-96 the CAS is behind the TB, 97-99 the CAS is on the intake cam-passenger side.

I've not yet had the need to remove the timing belt, so it's a bit of a relief that I won't have to learn that just yet - the CAS replacement will go a bit faster.

Thanks! I wonder if there are quality issues with OEM vs. Autozone/Carquest/etc. sensors. Any opinions? Guess the price will probably be the biggest factor for me.

Thanks again!

Sorry I've never traced the wires so I don't know if they just feed back into the main harness or use a connector at the end.

But as for Kragen/Autozone/Advanced etc I fouldn their pricing to be outrageous and picked up my OEM mitsu CAS online for $53 shipped.

Sorry for the late reply. How did it turn out?

Hey Kenamond. Old thread but I just started having the same P0340 problem on my '97 GST. It's intermittent. Starts and runs fine 99% of the time but every so often it'll take ten minutes of cranking before the problem goes away and then it runs fine again.

You didn't get back to us with the resolution to the problem. Did replacing the CAS fix the problem?
