so I just went through the initial set up and since I have a gm maf with a blowthru setup, I thought that I would have to choose hotwire for sensor type, but my car runs horribly and the engine light stays on. So I changed it to karmen sensor type and it runs fine. Why is that? Also, I set up the knock and it just has a number, how do you know if there is too much knock and what is a safe level to be at?

your car is a karman sensor. that is why it runs better. if there is a value of knock then you have that many counts of knock. hope that helps.

The GM Maf is a hotwire air metering device, but the translator converst the signal into a Karman signal so the stock ECU can read the airflow. The SAFC is spliced into the airflow line between the translator and the ECU so it is still a Karman signal input the SAFC.

The knock input to the SAFC just intrurprts the signal from the knock sensor and based on what it recieves it displays a number. I have never seen a actual table that references the knock number to a actual amount of knock. what you could do it monitor the knock number and log knock on pocketlogger and see approx what number is displayed for a cerian amount of knock you get at WOT. Again this is not a very accurate mthod but lets say you are doing a pul WOT and you see the SAFC knock increase to X number then you have a idea how much knock you MAY be getting. BUT DO NOT USE THIS NUMBER TO TUNE WITH. A pocketlogger or similar device is extremely valuable.

Hey i just aquired a safc 2 for my 92 laser awd (6 bolt) and i dont really have much expierience with dsms and I was wondering if anyone can help me with the initial setup. the car is stock minus the exhaust and headgasket/studs. I have read the manual for it and i kinda get it but i spent months rebuilding the block on weekends and I dont want to dick it up by doing the piggyback wrong. any help would be appreciated.
