I was just wondering will a SAAB side mount intercooler work as good as any other side mount. The reason why i am asking this is because I went to the pick N pull and i seen lots of 85-89 SAAB with sidemount intercoolers and Volvos with front mount intercooler but the volvo intercoolers look to big has in height. The price for any intercooler I find there is 30 bucks including the pipes. So any advice.

I got no clue about the flow characteristics, but a stock 2g side mount should go for less then 30bucks. And are you sure you can even use the pipes from the saab?

Before you buy anything for your turbo kit, plan it all out, make a list, and be pratical but dont' cut corners too much, or else you'll pay for it later.

I know the pipe wont be a direct fit but I can always cut the pipes and make them fit.

Volvo FMIC pies are really nice. The IC's are not super great. I had one on a 2.5 dodge turbo, it worked, my ebay FM worked much much better.

Can't comment on the saab side mount, this guy seems to like it

This guy also did some cool things with one

dual pass doubles the pressure drop for an equal number of tubes and does not necessitate a higher level of heat transfer. If you can weld aluminum, you might be able to fix that and have a really nice little IC for $30.

I have a question does it matter what way the intercooler is facing? By means i want to rorate the intercooler so the pipes are facing down . heres a pic of what i want to do <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e65/pleaseletmeinn/intercooler1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Nope, no difference there.

I don't think it matters, but I'd put the shorter squarer one on the turbo.

I take it you can't weld aluminum : )

You should also take some measurements to see if it's at all bigger, and look inside and see what the core is like. Looks like bar and plate to me, but I've seen extruded tube setup look like that.

Another thing to consider, if it is bigger, and you put it in the stock location, will it get proper air flow from the stock vent. Also, rocks 'n stuff.

You may be on to something, or you might just need to put it on craigslist to sell to someone with a Honda, it's too early to tell ;)

How are you going to know if it works better than your stock one or not?

Well, since he is referring to his 420a non turbo, I'm pretty sure it flows better than his stock one, seeing how hes doesn't have a stock one :p . If it was me I would turn your last picture clockwise 180 degrees and mount it on the drivers side for the shortest piping route, not to mention you will have the most room to work with.

Wait I am confussed I never knew i had a intercooler on my 420a =-) LOL well yeah i hear what you are saying ill try to mount it that way. Also i wanted to know with what can i clean my intercooler with? Can i use soap and water? Also i forgot to meantion which of the tubes are the one that conects to the turbo. The one on the left or right

Defiant = god

My 2 cents...if you're really looking to cut corners for $10 at this point, you don't need to even think about going turbo on your 420a because you're just gonna blow it up.

Well if i blow it up who's fault is that? Obviously its going to be yours. :beatentodeath:

That just confused me...

All I'm saying bro, is that this little venture into forced induction land is a never ending journey, and no it's not a yellow brick road either LOL. There will be plenty of unforseen expenses, delays, pita's, etc. All my point is...if you're already looking to cut corners, all you're gonna end up with in the end is a major headache and disappointment :|

Hey man, by all means if you're down with the set-up, thats all that matters. Just be careful with the boost on there. Heat is a primary facor or detonation, so if you hear anything simliar to a metal ball in a tin can when you're driving, pull over and grab a bite to eat or something.
I like the idea though, it's innovative.
Post pics when you're done.

Don't run open turbo like that...its very bad for your motor....you at least need a downpipe to help scavenge air away from the turbo and dissapate the heat just a little bit.

You meant scavenge. It's a term for extracting the charged air out of your cylinder during the motor cycle. Extracting the most air utilizes every last ounce of power available.

When I ran an open turbo, ALOT of shit melted.

I know open headers don't really help a lot. I am just saving up money so then I can do the whole 3' exhaust system. Everything is good no problems/leaks so thats coo.
