Ive noticed the smell of unburnt gas coming from my exhaust and black suit starting to appear on my rear bumper, My engine is COMPLETLY stock except for NGK 7BPRES plugs and a APEXi N1 Catback Exhaust....how the heck can i be running rich?

My car does the same thing, i ordered an o2 sensor will be at my door next week, i will let you know if its the o2.

recently i purchased a new front 02 sensor for 80 bucks i think with shipping and all and before i got the new one i could always smell unburnt gas and my back bumper would be black after about a week from the last wash and it was running rich pretty bad, well the new 02 sensor works great no more black suit on my bumber no more bad smells, it worked like a charm, i have also heard in eclipses they tend to go bad easy especialy 2nd gen. hope i helped :dsm:

the ECU runs the engine pig rich in open loop. the fuel maps have AFR's down to 9.7:1. pretty standard for a factory turbo'd car.

if the soot/smell is from mostly cruising and almost no WOT driving, then i'd look at the o2 sensor, but if you're doing a lot of hard driving, it's nothing out of the ordinary really..

tell me about it having a white dsm stinks! these cars tend to run real rich nothing outta the ordinary! besides its always better to run alittle rich then lean. my 2g pools the unburt gas into the pipe then once in a while it lets out a flameball!! another thing to remember is our cars will run richer in the colder temps!

yes, the CEL is on...ill switch back to the BPR6ES plugs and see what happens, i need to reaplce my 02 sensor also, just because it looks shot.

If you have a autozone in your area, go there and find out code is causing the CEL to come on. (it is free here).

yea i have seen o2 sensors from ebay to autozone and anywhere from 40 to 160 dollars it all depends on what brand you think is best and how much you want to spend.

I had something like that happen to me and it was the spark plugs and the o2 sensor was going bad. So for sure change those and it should be ok.

they run very rich from the factory because there are so many dumb people out there that like to turn up the boost and then say I had a boost gauge and thats it do I need more for tuning my engine. No genius you don't keep on tunning up the pressure :thumb: :rocks: LOL
