:banghead:other than changing spark plugs and wires, and o2 sensor.... how can i get my car to stop running so f'ing rich.?

So you've stated those things, did you REPLACE them or are you simply ruling them out because you think they're in good shape?

Lets start with some base info on your car, mileage please.

the car does smell like gas when i start it up but goes away a few seconds later.....
my car is a 91 tsi auto, it has about 95,885 miles something like that..... when i bought the car i was told the spark plugs coils and o2 sensors have been replaced...... i suspect that they are ok. but dealers do tell lies..... so im checking the plugs tomorrow morning.... i have wires on order and im getting new o2 sensors also on the way..... so if those are bad we will find out but im wondering wether it could be anything else..... i have noticed when my car heats up one fan will turn on but the second wont..... also when the air conditioning is on the other fan will turn on and the other one will stop..... my buddy thinks if i splice the two fans they will run together stopping the surge.....

no i wouldn't band aid the fans like that, when the ac is turned on the secondary fan is supposed to come on.

i have seen bad mafs cause rich conditions and run fine.

I agree that the dealer can be pretty shady. Just FYI, the service interval of ANY O2 sensor is 100k miles. So you're pretty close to that limit. I would say your problem is the O2 and I'm almost 100% on that. Although, plugs and wires will also cause a rich condition due to wear on the wires and incorrect gap and/or fouled plugs. Honestly though, if the O2 sensor IS bad, it creates a lean condition which the ecu will correct by adapting to the rich limit to protect the motor. By creating the rich fail safe condition, your plugs will have a really hard time combusting all of the fuel and will most likely fowl the plugs quickly.

My .02 is to get all those maintenance items taken care of and see where you're at. If it doesn't fix the problem, at least you've got it all replaced and can move on from there!!

good luck
