Ok,

The Eclipse... beautiful car, amazing handling all of it...

But I am losing my mind with this shifter.

Backstory: When I bought this car it was someone elses project car. And everything the previous owner did to it seemed fine and done with taste.

However he claimed he installed a short shifter. And I am not 100% sure if its the short shifters fault.

Basically, shifting is EXTREMELY rough. It is so hard to put it in reverse. It takes multiple attempts to put it in reverse. And, worst of all, if I try to do a heel toe downshift from 3rd to 2nd it is so hard to put it in second gear. It takes HOURS (not literally) to put it in gear.

Seriously, if anyone can provide a solid answer on how to fix this? This is getting seriously annoying.

Is it the clutch, thr syncs, short shifter, transmission fluid?

Thanks to any future answers...

PS: if anyone needs video footage of what is going on I am happy to provide!

I'll 2nd the clutch investigation. A spring fell out of my clutch plate, and It prevented me from getting gears with the engine running because the clutch was not disengaged.

If you can shift into all gears without the engine running, your gearbox is probably not the issue.

Have you bled the hydraulic system and properly adjusted the clutch engagement point at the master cylinder rod, inside the car at the pedal?
I will check this out, will keep you updated if it works, thanks

luckily I have no issues with this. The only little problem when the engine is turned off is that the 5th gear gets a bit harder to engage when the engine is off...

Thank you for the replies!

edit: I might post a video tonight of what is going on just for reference...

I forgot to update

I added new transmission fluid and all I can say is the shifting became so much smoother.

Even putting in reverse became easier.
However it can still be rough at times but for now the transmission fluid solved the main issue.

The car is old so who knows when was the last time someone added new fluid...

When the reverse idler teeth get rounded it becomes harder to shift into reverse. In this case, quite often if you let the clutch out to where it just barely starts to grab while trying to shift into reverse, it will slip in.

Also make sure the shifter cable casings are securely bolted down on the tranny and don't move while shifting (watch while someone is shifting).

Does it shift ok when engine is running at idle? If bad shifting when reving, the engine mounts may be worn (engine rocking causes cables to shorten/lengthen).

And especially if excessive side to side shifter play, look if select lever shoe is worn: https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/97-gs-t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.376341/#post-152266167

Late reply but here is what I can say

The shifter has absolutely no wobble or movement when driving or when it is at neutral going side to side.

Let us say I am driving fast in third gear and I attempt a heel and toe to downshift into second. It can sometimes be hard to put it into gear, it takes effort.

When it is at idle, it shifts fine in first and second, but at third gear it can be quite hard to shift. Also, when it is at idle, it wont shift into fifth at all.

However reverse can sometimes be ultra smooth or impossible. When it doesnt want to go into reverse, I try to force it and the car gets upset and jolts.

I could not tell you how many times I ended up in a situation where I had to go into reverse to give room for people to pass by, only to be sitting there for a good 10 seconds trying to put into reverse...

I have no clue what is going on, its completely random. Sometimes its smooth, sometimes horrible

I kind of got used to it rly. I just try to be more gentle with the shifter.

If I ever had to race with this car, the shifter would not allow fast shifting.

Sorry if I havent explained it well enough. It is just so confusing

But thank you for your reply and the info you shared.
