Hey everyone!

I have been seeing alot of newer members complaining of ROD KNOCK, and/or asking if a balance shaft can cause a knocking sound.

The answer is YES, the rear balance shaft bearing can go and will sound EXACTLY like a rod knocking.

A few days ago a 91 eclipse GSX came to me for a engine rebuild. The guy told me that he was messing around in town and heard his car to knock, and immediately shut it off and had it towed to my house.

What he thought was a ROD KNOCK, actually turned out to be the balance shaft! But thats not the best part, he actually drove the car for a while with the balance shaft hitting the block....I'll let the pictures do the explaining!

This is the balance shaft, can you see where it been beat to shit!?

So here is my advice to all the Newbies, if you hear a knocking noise...SHUT THE CAR OFF!! If you have some mechanical knowledge, pull the pan and check it out!

DO NOT KEEP DRIVIG THE CAR!

The major differance is the ballance shafts are turning 3 times crank speed where a rod knock is 1/2 crank speed.

The ballance shaft is more of a buzzz where a rod is thud thud thud and if you pull the plug wire it will for the most part go away. MAN but they both make metal, Don't ask me how I know:cry:

thats crazy, if it had been wearing like that for some time, hes lucky he didn't take out the bearings as well.

I have been having a strange knocking noise at idle i can not for the life of me figure out what the noise is. It only makes the knocking noise below 900 rpms and the car viberates real bad. when i got the car the BS belt was broken i replaced it. the car drove fine for a day then started making a knocking noise only at idle. I have reason to belive it is my rear BS bearing. But its weird no metal in my pan cut my oil filter apart and no metel.

You shouldnt be driving the car! Drop the T-case and exhaust, and pull the pan to check it out!
