2G rod knock? pics! your opinion

i have knock sound after i installed my head due to bent valves, started it up now i have a knock , dropped pan everything was clean , no metal anywhere , just eliminated my rear balance shaft with a stub ( just in case it was the shaft ) , and now im pulling the rod caps off to have a look, heres what i got. these are the rod caps, haven't pulled the rod bearings yet. let me know what you think, thanks

I'll bleed the lifters again, but idk guys its the same exact noise when I had a rod knock , 6months later I spun a bearing, I'll keep u posted

If you get bored try a compression test. That's when I just said F*** it and pulled the motor.

Once you hear true rod knock, its too late.. metal glitter in the oil, and in a short time, it will get progressively worse.

He said he checked the bearings, no material in the oil pan. Lifters, could be, but I also read about someone having a similar noise and it was due to a timing tensioner not holding tension. Which is why I asked how old it was. Hopefully the OP can get this sorted out.

Does a rod knock always result in metal shavings in the oil? Sorry to be a pain but but mine has me worried. I just bought this car 3 weeks ago "97 GS-T" and have only driven it around the block a dozen times to test repairs I have done. Before that it sat for 7 years after having the head gasket, timing belt, tensioner, and water pump replaced and the owner could not float the bill and surrendered it. Oil is clean, no shavings or glitter look. If I rev it up and hold at about 3k rpm's you can hear it, anything above or below you can't hear it. I can hear it at slow acceleration in 1st gear all the way up to where 5k. At idle in 2nd gear and go to quick acceleration, I cannot hear it. Compression is good, my buddy and I have a few ideas before we will accept a rod knock: timing off a tooth, lifters, or detonation. Car has plenty of power and idles smooth with no knocks. Im tapped on money after fixing the body and all the various sensor issues. Can anyone help? I took a video to capture the sound but the sound is hard to hear over the exhaust.

Well if I was worried about rod bearing sounds, I certainly wouldnt be running the engine at 5k rpms, yours sounds like it could be an exhaust leak or might just be rod knock.

From the video it sounds just like lifter noise. If it was rod knock it would be more of a solid slap as the piston would be slamming the bottom of the head and when you rev it like you did you would have heard it plane as day.. Are the lifters OEM? If so correct me if I am wrong the OEM lifters have always been notorious for that noise.. If they are OEM I would suggest going with the 3rd generation lifters.. dang near quiet as all can be..

From your video you can almost hear that slap i was talking about.. It's hard to tell with yours as the camera is not close to the motor. But from what I hear on there, that sounds almost like a bearing to me

Thanks everyone, I am going to inspect the bearings when I have time. Like I said I haven't had this car for very long and it rarely gets driven, just to test repairs such as an evap code that I've been trying to track down. Today is the fist time I heard the noise and was trying to diagnose, the reason for the revving. Since this problem has just surfaced, would it be wise to try and change the bearings? Reading through the forums, I have seen some say you can do this if you catch it early, while others say this is a death sentence for the motor with the possibility of throwing a rod. I am very OCD with engine noises so I am sure that this is a new problem. I took another video before reading your replies attempting to get better quality moving it in various places on the motor, I had to be quick not to disturb the neighbors. RedGST98 the lifters are OEM, from the beginning I planned on replacing the lifters as well as valve seals because the car was not ran for 7 years and I was thinking that without oil on the top end, this would dry them out.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to help, much respect. I hope this problem doesn't kill my budget, keeping my fingers crossed and praying .

Well I will chime in that is certainly not a rod knock its the lifters. Have you driven the car since you fixed the head? It takes several miles of driving and several engine shut offs for the lifters to pump up to normal.

Update: it was the lifters FML , did all that work for nothing , well at least I took the rear shaft out, but now I have high oil pressure. Can I run 5 30 syn? I have 10 30 right now and seeing 35psi at idle ( 1000rpms )

oil pressure will lower as it warms up... you will be fine

Cold start
warm idle
Cruise at 3000 rpm

You may need to port the OFH.

Doing the 3g lifters and replacing this oil port block on the left side of the head "forgot name "
is the route I've taken.
