I really like the look of the reverse lockout on newer Subarus.

You can buy the mechanism but it's like $100 and on top of that I don't know if it would work on our shifter. I've seen shiftknob spacers but they don't quite look as good.

So any idea on what I could do to get the look of a reverse lockout on my car? I don't want to spend the type of money they are asking for the things especially if I don't know if they will just slide over my shifter or not? So no this is not functional and does not improve anything whatsoever, but I genuinely think it would look good. I'm just asking for advice on how to get that desired look. Thank you.

Maybe you could find a machine shop that would make you something similar, about the cost.. no I am not aware of anything really cost effective that comes to mind. They do make some oddball shifter knobs out there, you could get and extended one with something similar on the bottom or cur the bottom to look like that.

Alternatively I mean.. trade your car for a subaru? Because they are our mortal enemy. jk. sorta.

Lockouts are not just on the shsft by in the selector base as well, it tends to hit the plae then you push or pull onnthe shifter to avoid the metal and go into gear, my old Renault had similer design and i like the ones where you pull up then oush the whole shaft down!

But they do it because most of the time nowadays if it has 5 speeds and they think it has a 6th then it stops them from doing it and causing issues,

However most normal Jap cars dont have lockouts! My skyline and Almera dont have them, fords do from memory so it might be a specific reason for it per car perhaps or its because the folks who buy them dont know how to drive and need extra protection from shifting wrong LOL.
But in all honesty its never been an issue but if its just for looks then i wouldnt waste the time or money on it personally!

Because I was young once and did things simply for looks, I'll indulge ROFL

Here's what I'd do:

Go on Ebay and select your choice of lockout collar. I'd go for the cheapest thing I could find, since you'll likely need to modify it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MS86-TERIDI...ckout-Collar-Shift-Boot-Adapter-/152502904963

Then, I'd drill and tap 3 small holes in the neck of the collar, just like a universal shift knob. The smaller hole/set screw the better, since you don't want them to be noticeable, and they really just have to hold the collar itself in place.

You'll also need a custom shift boot to fit the base of the collar, and the console of your Eclipse, so ensure you plan for that as well.

Good luck. Let us know how your project turns out.

Example of a universal shift knob with the holes/set screws I'm talking about below:
