Hey guys, I'm new and of course I have a problem. =(

I'm trying to get the crankshaft in the right position for Top Dead Center but I'm not sure where the allignment marks are for it. I was wondering if anyone could help me out? Here are some pics of what everything looks like right now:

Hmm... guess I should go sell my Advancing timing light then as I clearly need a retarding timing light then :rolleyes:

-if I dial it in +5* on the advancing timing light, my timing tick will register right around 0*, at TDC, not the other way around (this is also with 5* BTDC timing set).

Locke is right.

Advanced timing means the spark goes off SOONER. Retarded timing means the spark goes off LATER. This is why advancing timing makes power. It allows the air/fuel mixture to burn longer since the spark plug fires sooner. This means you get more of the mixtures potential.
 
I was going to say, this looked NOT GOOD. The notch I have the red arrow at should be close to 11 o'clock at TDC :OMG: If everything else was in TDC and it was that far off, I would suspect you have some bent valves. How does the car run now? I would do a compression test ASAP on that engine and see what pops up. Does it sound like a subaru (firing on 3 cylinders)?

I hope my valves aren't bent, each time before I started the car up I turned the crank over a couple times to make sure nothing was hitting. The engine is running kinda rough and the check engine light is on but this is the first time I've really had it running since I got the motor in the car so I'm not sure.

If worse comes to worse, I have a spare head in my garage. I'll do a compression check and get back to you.
 
I did a compression check and came out with 150 on all four cylinders. I believe my crankshaft was actually alligned properlly all along, it was the sensor blade that was throwing off my timing since I put it on backwards.
 
Well, I don't know how you managed to pull that off, especially since you needed to check all of the marks at TDC when you do a timing belt job; but for once I'm glad :) Now that it's figured out, get that thing on the road!

Hehe, same here! I can't wait to get it on the road, I haven't driven it yet and I've owned it for almost a year. Thank for all your help guys! :dsm:
