ive had my 91 n/t dsm 2.0 for about a year now, and i cant get over that its gone out of time and bent my intake and/or exhaust valves twice. then it did it to me one last time before i took the whole engine out and put in a used one. after a couple months it happens again. the only thing i can think thats causing this is that my radiator fan doesnt work properly while driving in town. maybe the belt gets too hot. if there is any info or advise on why this happens i would surely appreciate it..

The biggest thing I see go wrong is when you set the tensioner. Most set it too light and it runs out of stroke and there's still slack in the belt. It has to be right, I mean absolutely right. I've never lost an engine due to improper install. Well, not yet. I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I've just been very careful.

Get the VFAQ and do it the way it says and you should be ok.

Good Luck

Make sure you put the timing belt and all surrounding parts (NEW), and put them on right according to spec. If you do this, you don't have to worry about failing components.

I followed every post I could find and the VFAQ as well. It took me 4 times before the pin height was set to spec using a 5/32 drill bit. Still makes me a bit nervous as I haven't started it yet. I did replace all the timing parts with new.

Take your time, don't rush it.
