i've searched and searched but can't find anything like what's happening to me. so here goes.

i just replaced my starter. the brand new one is doing EXACTLY what the old one was and i replaced it thinking it was bad...well i either have really bad luck or something else is causing it. when i turn the key you can hear the starter whizzin around LOL but nothing happens 90% of the time and the other 10% it will grab for a second..but not enough to turn it over. it runs fine if i push start it but when it's running i hear this weird metallic noise coming from that general area, sounds like loose thin metal plating or something, hard to explain.

i have 2 likely solutions here, help me out guys.

1. i have a loose flywheel. this is highly doubtful but the first thing that came to mind just because it's a brand new starter, and that weird loose metal noise.

2. not getting enough power/wiring problems. seeing that i'm on my second one and it's doing the exact same thing as the first this seems more likely to happen than the first. my first one also died a slow death where it just wouldn't start sometimes and i'd have to wiggle the wires or whatever, but this time i made sure they were clean and snug.

the weird part about all of this is that it just happened last night, the weird spinny thing, and now the new one's doing it too. so...help! haha sorry for the long post guys my minds just everywhere right now with this and i really need to figure it out asap! thanks fellas:thumb:

flywheel teeth look good as new btw.

Two things first..

Have you checked the CPS lately?
Have you checked the starter solonoid ? Is it putting out the proper amount of voltage?

This kind of thing happened to my buddy's Grand Prix in the middle of the ghetto at 3 in the morning. He ripped alot of teeth off the flywheel so the starter wasn't catching.. But you already said the teeth look fine... Did you torque the flywheel down to spec? Is it an aftermarket flywheel?

what do you mean by checking it? i just rebuilt my motor and replaced it so it should still be fine as the car runs fine when i push start it. how do i check the solenoid? i was thinkin that i had some wiring problems...how could i do this? also yes it is an aftermarket flywheel from ##, but like i said the teeth are fine.

You're probably correct about and electrical issue. Check the starter wires for clean solid connections at both ends.

well...it's what i hoped it wasn't. it's my piece of s unorthodox flywheel. sounds like hell from within the bellhousing. thanks anyways for the help guys :thumb:
