just picked up a 92 talon 2.0 non turbo. The previous owner said he was driving down the road, turned on the ac unit and all of a sudden smelled burning rubber or plastic. pulled off the road and let it sit. tried to restart and would not. I have been reading on this sight trying to figure it out. This is what i know. When turning on the key to run pos. fuel pump does not run. Went to the bypass wire by the battery hooked it straight to the battery it ran. found the relay i have power at the 10 9 3 wires going in. coming out i have power at the 4 5 7 wires but not the 2 wire and the 8 wire. The funny part is with the key off i have power at the 8 wire until you turn the key to run pos. than no more power. if i jump the 3 wire to the 2 wire the fuel pump will run but the car still does not. Please help if anybody can new to this car. I hate throwing money at parts i do not need just to see if that will work. Sorry for the long post first time out.

This is all I can ask now since I'm heading out, but when you attempt to run the car, does it try to start, just a clicking sound or nothing? I'd say try a new relay if it's not working properly. Good luck.

The fuel pump doesn't turn on unless the car is cranking. It will only turn on when it receives the signal from the cam angle sensor. It will do nothing with the ignition turned on. Test the wires again with the car cranking and see what you get. Also, try spraying a little starter fluid into the tb and try to start the car. If it tries to run with the fluid, the fuel injectors are not turning on for some reason.

Another thing you can check is your ecu. It may be damaged. Maybe that was the smell the previous owner was talking about.

Sounds like the ECU or the MPI relay which is AKA the fuel pump relay. I hate hate hate electrical problems. Get ready to be patient you might as well just start a checklist and start studying wiring diagrams. Use your sniffer too you should be able to smell electralysis on whatever it was that burnt.

Was the burning smell inside the cabin of the car or in the engine compartment if it was in the cabin of the car it was ecu going out, and like tunethis said you have to check the fuel pump while the engine is turning over. I hope you didn't pay alot for the car because in all honesty I would never buy a car with electrical problems, make sure to pick up a chilton and a haynes manual from your local parts store because they have the wiring diagrams that you will need, and be prepared to do alot of searching. But good luck with the vehicle.

Thanks guys. The smell was inside the cabin. Tried the starting fluid after post and it wanted to start. Only paid 150 for it. Clean car with new brakes and brand new tires. Previous owner did not want to mess with it. It was his back up to back up car. What is the black\blue wire comeing out of the relay for. It looks like it goes to the ecu. Thanks agian.

I'm not sure what the black/blue wire is for but, I'm am starting to lean more towards the ecu. My car had the same problem. It would just crank and not start. I was getting no fuel but ,the fuel pump worked and I was getting spark. I grounded one of the injectors to see if it would shoot fuel and it did. At the point, I narrowed it down to the ecu. After I replaced it with a good one, it fired right up. Have you opened up your ecu to see if it is damaged? Those capicitors are known to leak and cause damage.

Thanks agian guys. Opend up the ecu smelled burnt. I am now leaning towards the ecu also. the previous owner said it was replaced about 5 years ago. Will get one this weekend and see what happens. will let you know.

With a DSM that won't crank, first thing you need to do it check the timing belt to see if it is broken or missing a few teeth. If it is okay, which I doubt it is, do a compression test. You can rent a compression tester from auto zone, numbers have to be above 75 to crank, but should be way higher.

Thanks silver99gsx that would be great to know. There is also somebody out here that rebuilds them also. I am going to grab a known good ecu this saturday and see what happens. Cross my fingers.

no have not tried new ecu yet. have not had time to go get it yet. pulled my ecu apart tonite. it looked all right on top. when i took the board off of the case and flipped it i found burn marks on the case and on the board. the cap nearest the plug ins was fried. what causes that anyone help me out. thanks

Put new used ecu in and it ran. yeah. Hey silver99gsx did you ever ask your buddy who rebuilt his ecu.
