Alright guys, so my car has been acting up since after the 14b turbo install. It would drive "ok" during normal driving conditions meaning it would boost ok since its not under alot of load. But when I drive it more aggressive, it would sound like it builds boost and just as it kicks in, I hear a loud high pitch scream somewhere under the hood I cannot pinpoint just yet. The car also then would feel like the power starts fading away, The rpm keeps climbing but no kick really, I have all manifold bolts torqued and tightened, I'm not using T-bolt clamps, and my bov is greddy type s.

The RPM's still go up but when the sound comes, it feels like its leaking boost out and sounds like a supercharger... like a high pitched squeal,

This sound only happens at high boost levels...

Well, have you check for boost leaks yet? That's your first step.

Also, check the turbo for shaft play. The supercharger sound could be the compressor wheel rubbing against the compressor cover due to excessive shaft play.

When the power "fades away", does the boost drop as well? Is it creeping and then recovering?

Hmm.. ill do a test run and check if the boost drops off as well...

It does this more or less depending on my boost level, also it still pulls way harder then my T25 (which had back and forth, in and out) worse shaft play than this one, and the T25 was VERY quiet, but this 14b sounds like a blow horn under boost.

Ok I just tightened my bov/ic pipes... did a test run, and learned a little info on this matter... it does it less now and got more quiet, mostly when the car is colder, but still does it quietly when it warms up, when it creeps to 18-19psi it does it in 4th and 5th gear @ very high RPM's

now it sounds like an air balloon "when you poke it with a needle but it doesn't pop"(not the gurgling noise) but the high pitched squeal...

by that time it hits fuel cut and jerks hard, also the boost keeps rising as i hear the sound also.

This was my exact turbo noise...

how other members have posted take off the intake and check for shafty play my car was doing the same thing it sounded like a supercharger and once I checked the turbo there was alot of shaft play including in and out shaft play

Depending on your BOV it may be leaking more noticably under the higher boost. I would suggest a boost leak test. The test is quick and the tool can be made for less than $10. Boost leak test it then let us know the result.:thumb:

I checked the turbo for play before i installed it, then i primed it.

Well it stopped making the noise and I'm still not sure EXACTLY where it came from but I tightened all my intercooler pipes/couplers etc, tightened my BOV, and my oil filter was loose so i took care of that, and i disconnected and reconnected all of my boost hoses...

It sounds exactly like a boost leak. I had one, sounded like a kazoo everytime I hit boost. It was kinda funny. 5 min with a BLT and a wrench and it was gone. Do a boost leak test, the fact you heard it meant it was big, but you still might have some small ones.

Ok so the noise came back, I just made this video tonight... sorry its sort of dark, but you can hear it clearly with the sound up. Just wondering if this sounds like really bad shaft play, I checked the turbo and shaft play is minimal, just wanted some opinions.

Did you try checking the allen bolts where your j pipe connect to your turbo. Mine were loose and when I did a blt it squeeled till I tightened them.

Hey yea, I was using the wrong bolts, I put the allen ones one and tightened them and now the sound is gone period!:thumb:

thanks, I appreciate the help. Major boost leak! ftl

i have the exact same sound and it started after i put a maf and maft on but i took it off and put my stock intake on and it still does it and its very annoying my upper inter cooler pipe is kind of bent up where the bov bolts on it is possible this noise could occur due to it not seating properly??

i tightened the j pipe and all the inter cooler clamps and the noise is gone
