Under boost when the turbo spools it is very high pitched. I pulled the intake pipe and checked the shaft play there is no in and out and very minimal up and down. It does not hit the housing at all. This all started after I tapped my j-pipe for my boost controller. I thought it could just be the boost passing over the threads in the pipe but I could be wrong. Any ideas would be very helpful thank you in advance.

Boost leak test, see if boost is leaking out of any strange spots. What turbo & intake setup (BOV, pipes couplers, etc)?

+1 for boost leak

Sounds like a small amount of air is escaping somwhere and causing a high pitched sound. Get some soap that likes to bubble and put your system under pressure. Judging by the high pitched sound i would say it's most likely a leaking thread on a fitting.

I did not change the boost level and the only thing that was added was the nipple in the j-pipe. That's what has me so confused I didn't change anything else.

I used teflon tape on the threads is there anything you guys would recomend to put on the outside of nipple to seal it better?

I have two ideas. One is a boost leak as others have suggested (you had to remove the IC pipes to do this, right?) The other is that the hole is whistling like a flute as the turbo flow screams by the hole. Did you clean up the inside (burrs) where you drilled through?

That actually sounds very possible. I've had that happen on a few lab projects where the flow was strong enough to cause it to whistle. I say for sure check that out. And if it's not shaft play making it hit the housing, it's a boost leak somewhere.

I did clean it up where I drilled but I wonder if it is coming from the threads going into the pipe I assume that would have the same effect.

Hmm, mine does that too, but has since I did my exhaust. I'll bet I have a leak at my exhaust manifold. I thought it sounded kind of neat.....LOL Time for a new gasket and my 2g manifold I guess.

I did do a boost leak test and everything was perfect. When I put the nipple in there was very little thread actually in the pipe. I am going to put some JB weld on the outside of the nipple tonight so it will not have a chance of leaking in the future. Does anyone make a j-pipe that bends to the driverside for the frontmount that already has a nipple in it? Thanks for the responses I thought my turbo was shot for a minute.

Just a quick update. I went to Ray Peters shop for some help with tuning and in the midst of getting the car to finally run right he found a huge leak right at the base of the j-pipe. Problem fixed no more whistle. It was a huge leak and I managed to overlook it. Thanks for all of the suggestions and the help.

I know I'm busted. I hope everyone learns from my mistake and does not overlook anything no matter how certain you are there is nothing wrong with it. On a good note the car is running better than it ever has. Thanks Ray.

I was only busting your chops. :D I hope you have plans this weekend to give her a complete and through boost leak test. ;)

hey guys i have a 97 gst spyder, just yesterday i noticed a high pitch sound when the boost builds up, I am new to the whole dsm world. I had the side mount IC tightened up when i replaced the power steering belt. I have no clue what to do, any suggestions?...
What i can tell on the car it is pretty much stock except for the headers and exhuast. I can up load a pic if that would help, also i did find out I have to change the idle control valve since its coding with the chk engine.. any help would be great.. Thanks

If it sounds like it's coming from the turbocharger, I'd pull the intake pipe off the compressor inlet and check the turbo for shaft play. In/out is bad (shouldn't have any play), but a bit of side/side is normal. It should spin freely, too.

After that, do a boost leak test.
