[RESOLVED] 91 tsi awd jumped timing

ok i bought a 91 tsi awd a few days ago... i ran 91 like you should... for mods it has cat back, intake, safc, manuel boost controller, ported head, 4 angel valve job.... there probly a few others but i cant think of them right now...

problem 1- car died at almost every stop sign.... or when i slowed down

problem 2- i was driving it and i got cut of almost everything.... it wanted to die so tried to give it gas but nothing happend

problem 3- pulled the plug wires to see if that was the problem but it wasnt
so i pulled the spark plugs and found out the number 1 plug was burned to shit.....

problem 4- i then replaced the spark plug with the same one it had (waiting for the NGKs to come in) i here the fuel pump injectors and starter working it might get a couple chugs outa it then all you here is the starter *not firing*

problem 5- i pulled the upper timing belt cover off and the belt is all fury looking on the side of the closed cover side.... meaning im guessing it rubbed up against the chain thing lower down and moved the belt to rub up against the cover but its torn to shit.... belt looks fairly new... no major cracks that i could see.... ALL teeth are still there so i dont think the timing would have skipped...

problem 6- after changing out the spak plug i decided to see if shell start.... so i put in the clutch and i get a even weirder noinse (thinking its the timing belt)

problem 7- when i got on it a little bit i heard a wierd winding sound that was kinda loud i was told its normal and its from the T case
idk what it could be but basicly ill go to start it get a couple chugs then no firing up.... idk if i threw a vavle or bent one but from what im toled youd beable to here it if i did....so... ya.... let me know what you guys got...im in desperate need ofhelp....
 
whata you mean check the marks and look for what???? like on the belt and the cam gears or what?

i do have pics but i dont have a thing to host them on here.....
 
yes i can email them.... gimme your email and ill send them.... i can see one of the marks on the cam gear toward the intake mani.... but the ontehr i canot.... and i dont see any marks on the timing belt... thats the first thing i looked for...its kinda hard to tell anything on the timing belt....

Did you check to make sure all the timing marks lined up yet? Also check to make sure the plugs have the correct gap. They constantly get banged around during shipping. Can you post a pic of the plug that was burnt up.
 
if the marks on the cam gears are suposed to point the same way there not... ones about 4 maybe 6 or so teeth off.... i cant tell by the belt though..... and the NGK plugs are coming from a town about 45 miles from were i live.... i just got a cheapo plug 4 now... and it does have th right gap.... when this happend there was no smoke trail or anything the oil is good and its color... coolant is good....
 
if i get all that done will it start because right now it isnt doing much of anything.....
 
ok.... thanks alot! i really dont think a valve got bent because its been doing this since i gased up in white wood... since your from casper you might know were im talking about.... it was minor at first then just like chugged/cut off then just quiet on me.... and from what im tolled i would have heard or noticed if i bent a valve or somthing like that....

plus the head its midly built...so idk.... its got a 4 angel valve job.... so ill see.... if it did i know were i can get another one with stage 3 cams and a few other goodies
 
i checked the marks the intake is off maybe 3 degrees TOPS! wich shouldnt screw up my valves but would explain why my idel was a lil messed up... and the belt was rubbing the cover and the balance shaft *i think thats what its called* so i think im goin to get a eliminator also.... i know i was having a recirculation problem but it idnt seem to major but i guess that would explain the intake being off a few degrees....

for the noise i guess that is very possible.... i know as i speed up it got louder wich makes sence..... and for the logging...i do have a data logger but i can figure out how to get it working.... it wont charge or anything.... i was told i have to hot sync the program to it but im not all techno smart and stuff so....
 
Im curious how the intake sprocket is off three degrees. One tooth is about 7 degrees. Also if you do a compression test you will know if you hurt you motor.
 
ok well i didnt know that... iv never ####ed around with timing on any of my vehicals iv had the pros do it and thats probly a good thing! its off 3 notchs so 21 degrees i guess

for me
i also had the timing belt starting to "walk" off like this and it sounds like something was rubbing together so I popped the hood and saw the timing belt hanging off the cam gear and shut the car immediatly

you can see the exaust was lined straight or almost straight up but the intake was off a bit.... so idk..... if the valves are bent is my whole head shit now?

so what percent do you think i got bent valves?
 
Its really hard to say how many valves are bent. The valves will be an easy fix for any experienced mechanic. Not to scare you but, I'm curious what that Piece of your spark plug did to your piston/walls. If you got lucky it flew out the exhaust valve with minor damage.Your head is good. Keep it.
 
You know. I know what you mean, but check this out. When i check my timing my marks both point straight up. I believe that they only line up every 6 rotations. I could be wrong.
 
it did... i called one of my good friends wich happen to be one of the best mechnics i know and he told me to get a flex magnets and slowly and carfully put it down there so see if i pick anything up wich i didnt... i mean i might have scratched somthing but idk.... im just kinda pissed because i had the car for one ####ing day and it does this!

idk anything about the timing but i think if it get any worse im goin to scrap the motor and get a diff one.... this is the second dsm to take a shit on me and its really pissing me off... i cant get away from them either....haha
