I recently inherited some coilovers from a buddy. The only reason I took them was because i desperately needed new struts anyway. Unfortunately I'm now 2" lower (which SUX where I live; the streets are like Beirut), and one of my front shocks/struts is leaking fluid.
When i get new front shocks, how do I put them on? I obviously don't need a spring compresssor, but how do I get the bottom piece (where the height adjusters are) off? There's a couple little hex bolts. Is that it?

The hex bolts(allen keys)screw and tighten to the actual cylinder base. Just unscrew them to remove the adjusting unit.

And correct..you do not need a spring compressor.
