Well I was replacing my piston rings today and the #4 piston ended up being cracked and broken where the rings go on the piston. I am in dire need of a piston bored 20 over so if anyone has one PM me. Sorry for the bad pics all I had was my phone. I guess I found the reason for my bad compression.

Yep needs to be 20 over. I'm really needing a piston so I can take my car with me when I move out of state Tuesday. This whole situation blows and couldn't have happened at a worse time.

Well I guess unless by some miracle I find someone local that has a stock piston then I will be ordering some. I will have to come back this weekend to finish the rebuild and get my dsm back on the road so I can have a car.

Well to make a long story short I ended up purchasing NPR pistons and rebuilt the short block over a weekend. I got the car all buttoned up and went to put some miles on it when the car stared over heating pushing coolant out everywhere. I let it cool down before I started it again and sure enough I was pushing coolant out of my overflow before I even reached operating temp. I am leaning towards a damaged head. I am about to give up on this damn car.

yeah i know what u mean.. dsm is so like that.. wish i had a jeep...

I don't want to knock my dsm but I am just getting burned out. I have seen the inside of that motor enough for two lifetimes. I won't to fix it but I don't have the motivation right now. A broken DSM is still way better than a Jeep though :p

Is it your dd? If it is, then make it not your dd with the quickness and you will like it much better. Then you can let it sit for weeks on end without worrying about getting to work or getting around town. Plus you have all the time in the world to build it right and not rush thru stuff. Not saying that you were, but the pressure of needing it to get around rushes jobs that need more time to be done right, or stuff gets missed and shortcuts are taken.

i know I should problably post this somewhere else but since there related can any body post step by step video on how they rebuild there engine it just would help some many of us like me who want to learn but its easier for us to see it then read it. Thanks alot

Hey ifellubu go to youtube and do a search awhile back there was a video about rebuilding one of our motors, and there are alot of motor rebuilding videos out there to check out also I dont think one specificlly for our motors but they all go together about the same way.

Man your best bet is to buddy up with someone who has experience with internal engine work. That is how I learned is having someone there helping who has been through it all and can share what they have learned. Rebuilding an engine is like riding a bike after you do it once it will be cake. :thumb:

Damn, that sucks man. I'm in the same position as you. But I haven't pulled the motor or pistons yet, but I'm sure that's what my pistons look like. My cyl. 3 has some good scoring going on, enough to make me think I need .020 pistons as well.
I had my car down for a couple of months while i moved into my new house, I finally got it running last week to discover a blown headgasket pushing coolant everywhere and blowing smoke. As I investigated the whole situation, it just got worse.

Luckily I have my RX-8 as my DD, but every time I see a t/e/l I want mine back blowing the doors off some cobras.
Having a DD definitely keeps you sane. Soon enough though mine will be stored for winter (more like a salt storm), then it's praying the DSM is reliable throughout winter.

The video idea is a good one, but honestly if you need a video for assistance, I'd recommend you take an engine class at a local community college. There's so many things you just can't learn by watching a video... you really need a seasoned instructor to watch over you while you build an engine in a controlled environment. Building an engine sounds easy, some instructions attempt to make it easy, and it may even seem easy watching a video. However, to do it right takes years of experience and repetition. If you want to do it step by step without any training that's great. Get a junkyard engine and go at it. However, if you don't do your homework and do things right you're going to end up with a thread of your own.

For you, I'd recommend Tom Monroe's book here:
Amazon.com: Engine Builder's Handbook (0075478012459): Tom Monroe: Books

Also, this book is DSM specific and is a great read:

its funny that you mentioned that lacroixdp cause I did go to school for mechanics I got done with my first semester which was electronics and suspensions when I was going to the second semester which included engines my transmission got messed up from launching hard and grinding I broke a gear and sincee then I having been able to go back to school since it was a 45 minute drive

Well I am back with another horror story and to finally wash my hands of everything DSM. The car was overheating because of a cracked head. I made a trip back to Kansas last week to replace the head and get the car going so I can drive it back home to Oklahoma. I bought a head from a buddy and spent a few hundred dollars at the machine shop replacing everything so when I installed this head my motor would be virtually brand new. I got the car all back together and drove it around to finish breaking it in before the trip back home, the car ran great. I drove home last night with zero problems. I went to go to the auto part store this morning and again had plenty of power and ran flawlessly. I parked it for ten minutes and went to leave again and before I could make it out of the driveway my motor was making this nasty noise so I pulled the car back into the garage. Popped the hood looked around the started it again; it sounded like I had marbles in my valve cover. I pulled the valve cover and nothing was out of place. I pulled the cam gear cover and my Timing Belt was just "resting" on my gears not even in the teeth. So in conclusion I spent another 500 dollars to get my Dsm on the road and because of a tensioner I have to do it all over again. Bent Valves FML :banghead:

All new belts of course but no new tensioner. I am kicking myself in the ass for not doing so but damn can this car just give me a break?

Well, new belts , but not a new tentioner? thats like playing russian roulette, so all of it isn't the cars fault then. I understand your feelings, but I learned a long time ago if you wanna play with dsms, you got play by their rules and thats always maintenance first and no skipping on anything.
